[edit] Controversy

After Dr. Brenda Wells was hired as principal for the 2007-2008 school year following the retirement of Don Swisher, controversy arose over her strict enforcement of the dress code. Many students are disgruntled over the banning of any clothing featuring skulls, and the issue is set to go before the board of education. She is well known for her catch-phrase, "It's Great to be a Buccaneer!

Between the end of the 2006-2007 school year and October of 2007, Buckhannon-Upshur High School experienced three code reds. A code red is a school lockdown, due to a potential threat to human life. The first was caused by a false 911 call made by Sophomore students, claiming that a teacher had been shot. The second two were instigated after 22 caliber shells were found in the building on two separate occasions.2

One day in November 2006, Buckhannon-Upshur High School was closed due to water damage. A water faucet in one of the upstairs science rooms was left running overnight, causing numerous classrooms to flood and receive extensive damage. The vandals (nicknamed the "Wet Bandits") have yet to be identified.

In the midst of the 2006-2007 school year, there was some disgust over the defacing of the Buccaneer logo in a stairwell on the second floor. A large, adhesive phallus was spotted on the Buccaneer just after first lunch one day in mid-February 2007. Some extensive investigation has gone into finding the vandals, but there are no answers at this time. (Adrian Rogers)

[edit] Alma Mater

Hail to thee, our Alma Mater,
Hail, our B-U High,
We attend with hearts of gladness,
All for thee we strive,

Lift our banner, speed it onward,
Loud and free we cry,
Hail to thee, our Alma Mater
Hail our B-U High

Hum first stanza, then repeat the chorus.
