Bucium is a Romanian band, distinguished by the sound of the two violins, among all other sounds typical for rock – guitars, bass, drums and voice. Its musical style is folk, rock, ambiental. The band was first established as a concept in October 2000, but only after four years, the band started to give its first concerts in public. In March 2008, Bucium launched its debut album - "Voievozii", distributed in Romania by A&A Records.

[edit] Musical style

The tracks alternate dialogues between instruments (violins & others) and the frequent change of the tempo. What characterizes Bucium is the variation of parts - from aggressive to harmonious, from lofty to tense. In depth, Bucium comprises tribal elements and primitive sounds, accounting for the ancient sound. But its musical style embraces all kinds of influences - from progressive, ambiental, folklorism (a style from classical music) to rock & artrock.

[edit] Discography

"Voievozii"- 2008. The debut album was recorded in February – June 2006, in a local studio, called Recreate Records. From October 2006 to May 2007, the album was remixed and mastered in Little Creek studio in Switzerland, by Franky Winkelmann (sound engineer of Destruction, Lake of Tears, Fear my Thoughts, Darkmoon, bass player in the Swiss band - Gurd). All tracks on “Voievozii” have been conceived to make up a conceptual album. This musical project was rooted in the idea that everything that is good in a people’s spirit needs to be associated with determination, hence the rhythm swingings. The album contains the following tracks: „Voievozii”, „Rovine 1394”, „Basarabii”, „Războieni”, ”Maria Doamna - Rareşoaia”, „Zalmoxe”, “Morgana” and “Sorbul Apelor”. The album, apart from all its messages and symbolic meanings that cannot be easily deciphered, has an epic thread: the ritual of the Basarabs (sacerdotal cast of Dacians out of which the leaders were chosen) and then goes through a series of states, interior strains and attitudes. The album starts with a spoken passage recited by Doru Stănculescu, a Romanian folk singer. The 8 tracks on “Voievozii” last around 55 minutes.

[edit] Future recordings

Bucium has already completed all tracks for two other albums. Both albums are conceptual. The first one - „Miorita” – is going to be recorded this coming fall. The concert setlist lasts more than 2 hours.

The bucium  is a type of Alpenhorn used by people who live in the mountanous regions of Romania. The bucium was also used to send signals during military conflicts.Integrated into pastoral life, it is used to call the sheep into the sheep-folds in the afternoons and evenings. In the Apuseni mountains it is also used in the morning when taking the sheep out. [1]
