[edit] What needs to be done to this template

I'd say the first order of business would be translating everything from German to English. The names of the symbols, for example, are just too strange and non-intuitive as they stand. I'm not about to take this on just yet without knowing more about how this thing works.

Yeah, yeah, I know this is 'sposed to be used on my "talk" page. I need help with the table I started above showing the symbols available for this very useful, but until now totally undocumented feature for illustrating rail lines. Can someone who knows how to use this help me out here? Obviously, my table is malformed (notice the stray garbage up above), and I only put those symbols I could find into the table; there are probably more. It'd also be nice to put headings on the table (notice I've included the name of the symbol in the 2nd column.) Any help much appreciated! +ILike2BeAnonymous 02:16, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

I've dressed it up a little bit; if you prefer to have the box on the left, you can add style="float:left" right after where the infobox class is specified. If that looks good to you, you can remove the helpme, if not, it'll stick around until someone else has a look. – Luna Santin (talk) 02:41, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

Also, just a suggestion, but it may be worthwhile to produce a #switch: statement, which would support aliases for those image names (in other words, you say "tunnel" and it calls the right image -- would need to be a little more elaborate, of course, but hopefully easier to remember and edit than the current method). See WP:TRAIL for documentation, how to use this template, etc, etc and talk on modifications to the various templates involved. BS2 is a minor part of a wider template. As for names, it was designed by the Germans, but it used via the commons across several languages so it would be hard for us to say translate all filenames to english.... Thanks. First of all, regarding translation, at least two statements lead one to believe that there is a move afoot to translate all this stuff to English: from Wikipedia:Route diagram template, "Please note that this page is currently a translation in progress, and some sections are not translated from the original German yet.", and the fact that this template is in the Category "German rail line templates needing translation". So am I correct in assuming that there is at least an intention of eventually translating this to English? Or does this simply mean that the supporting documentation is planned to be translated, but not the templates themselves? If so, would it be a bad thing to make English copies of these templates? Or would that be opening another can of worms (parallel but diverging templates)?

Regarding documentation: thanks for the link. (Actually, the documentation lives at Wikipedia:Route diagram template.) Shouldn't this link be prominently displayed on the template page somewhere for those seeking instructions on using this? Is that the usual place for such instructional links? (If so, I'll probably remove this small table from this page, unless someone thinks it might be useful as some kind of mini-primer on using the template.) +ILike2BeAnonymous 18:58, 8 July 2007 (UTC)

a) the documentation was ported over in German, and translated piecemeal, hence that statement you refer to. the actual icons, eg "BHF" for station, aren't down to be translated, as it referees to a file on the commons shared by the English, dutch, French and German (and a few others i think) Wikipedia. all images should be on the commons as i understand it (unless copyrighted).

b) yes there should be a link saying something like "for info on how to use this template click here" ;)

As you might gather BS2 is a two column template, another starts off the whole WP:TRAIL template, and you can switch between BS 1 thru 5 (i think).

Re: a): OK, that makes sense. Tell me; is there any way that another set of names for the icons could be aliased somehow, to use the same set of images but give them more intuitive names? Would this be worth the effort? As it is, the names seem totally arbitrary to an English speaker, so constant reference to the documentation is needed for editing.

a) firstly thats beyond my technical knowledge of how stuff works. secondly there is a simple little programme called spoorstrip (link on the WP:TRAIL page) which allows you to click the pictures/icons and it creates the "code" for you and all you do is copy and paste it back in.

b) yeah the whole not included user documentation thingy - again not my area of expertise.
