Karl Briullov

This is a picture of the artist as he was in later life after he had become ill. There is another self portrait of the artist in "The last days of Pompeii". It was rumored that Karl was in love with a woman of Aristocracy but was never able to publicly marry her. He did a picture of her on a horse, this was not the woman in the portrait who is admiring the grapes, who was a simple Italian girl. Karl had to cover his feelings for her, because he was of a lower level. Karl went to Pomeii with her, but she was engaged to another aristocratic suitor.
