"Brush Away" is a song by Alice in Chains, and is the second track off their 1995 self titled album. Written and sung by vocalist Layne Staley, "Brush Away" is one of the heavier songs included on the album.
"Brush Away" features a modulation effect on the rhythm guitars during the intro and verses. The odd-sounding guitar solo came about in an attempt to record a backward guitar solo. According to Jerry Cantrell[1], he kept starting and stopping as he was unsure which part of the song the lead would end. In each instance, feedback from the amplifier would squelch for a moment, and then he would start again. The results were interesting enough to him to remain as they were.
Lyrically, the song focuses on the narrator's increasing paranoia and reluctance to be amongst friends.
