Bruno Marcelo Pereira Fernandes, more famously known as Bruno, (born June 30, 1974 in Funchal, Madeira, Portugal) is a Portuguese professional footballer, currently playing for Marítimo.
A graduate of Marítimo's youth academy, he made his debut with the first team in 1992, but was soon loaned to local side Camacha for the 1993/94 season. From 1994 to 2002 Bruno worked his way into the team and soon became a fan favourite and one of the best attacking players in the league. His goal against Leeds United in the UEFA Cup 2001-02, a thundering forty-five yard free kick, gave Marítimo a famous 1-0 victory against the English team. Many top European clubs became interested in the midfielder and he earned a trial with Newcastle United F.C. before accepting an offer to stay in his home country with powerhouse FC Porto in 2002.[1]
However, his dream move proved a nightmare and Bruno was soon loaned out to Marítimo during the 2002/03 season [2] and Moreirense in 2003/04 before signing for another of his hometown teams, and Marítimo's fierce rivals, Nacional da Madeira in 2004. After three season with Nacional, which included more UEFA Cup exploits against Sevilla FC and Rapid Bucharest, Bruno resigned for a third spell with his boyhood team Marítimo in 2007 on a free transfer.
