[edit] Indian citizenship

The article stated that American Indians are citizens of both the U.S. and their respective Nations. In that case, are they actually dual citizens as is commonly understood? Do those Nations issue passports and have immigration laws and such? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Jlujan69 (talkcontribs) 3 February 2006.

You misunderstood the article. In the 1830's the members decided they had moved enough, so they asked to have individual titles to their land (instead of tribal ownership of the land). The U.S. federal government ended their recognition of the tribe, and the members became citizens of the U.S. (and NOT of the tribe that no longer existed). My opinion is that was a trick played on the tribe (but I had to keep objective viewpoint for an encyclopedia. I struggled on how to word the article to made this distinction clear without presenting a point of view. Royalbroil 19:51, 3 February 2006 (UTC)
