Brown Mackie College – Merrillville in Merrillville, Indiana, is a member of the Brown Mackie College system of schools, a collection of private, for-profit educational institutions for career preparation in the business, legal, health sciences, information technology, and creative fields. The Brown Mackie College system of schools has 18 locations in eight states throughout the Midwestern, southeastern, and southwestern United States, and has a total enrollment of 9,078 students (as of fall 2006). The Brown Mackie College schools are owned by Education Management Corporation, based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Brown Mackie College schools provide bachelor’s degree, associate’s degree, diploma, and certificate programs.
Brown Mackie College - Merrillville has the following branches: Brown Mackie College - Michigan City and Brown Mackie College - Moline.

Founded in 1890 by A.N. Hirons as LaPorte Business College in LaPorte, Indiana, the institution later became known as Commonwealth Business College. In 1919, ownership was transferred to Grace and J.J. Moore, who successfully operated the College under the name of Reese School of Business for several decades. In 1975, the College came under the ownership of Steven C. Smith as Commonwealth Business College. A second location, now know as Brown Mackie College — Merrillville, was opened in 1984, in Merrillville, Indiana, and a third location was opened a year later in Davenport, Iowa. In 1985, the Davenport location relocated to its present site in Moline, Illinois, and is now known as Brown Mackie College - Moline.
In 1995, Brown Mackie College — Merrillville came under the ownership of Commonwealth Business College Education Corporation and in 1997, the LaPorte location moved to its present site in Michigan City, Indiana, and is now known as Brown Mackie College - Michigan City. The current school name, Brown Mackie College — Merrillville, became official when the College changed ownership in September 2003.

Brown Mackie College — Merrillville is accredited by the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools (ACICS) to award associate’s degrees and diplomas. ACICS is listed as a nationally recognized accrediting agency by the United States Department of Education. Its accreditation of degree-granting institutions also is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.
