Brown Lake is a lake on North Stradbroke Island, in Queensland, Australia.
The lake, like other lakes on the sandy islands in the region of South-East Queensland retains its water due to a layer of leaves at lining the bottom, known as a littoral layer, meaning, literally, layer of leaves.
In the case of Brown Lake, the phenomenon is particularly apparent as tannin exuded from the littoral-layer leaves, dropped from surrounding melaleuca trees including Ti-tree aka tea tree, and other paperbark trees, stain the water to a colour of rich brown not dissimilar to that of tea. It was because of this colouring that the Aborigines believed that it had medicinal benefits. It was known by the Aborigines as Women's lake.
