Brooks World Poverty Institute

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Brooks World Poverty Institute (BWPI) is a research centre connected to the University of Manchester dedicated to multidisciplinary research on poverty, inequality and growth. It was created in 2005 following the donation of £1.3 million to the university by the Rory and Elizabeth Brooks Foundation, comprising one of the largest known gifts to fund poverty research in Europe. This has been augmented by funding from the University of Manchester. [1] Professor Joseph Stiglitz, former Chief Economist of the World Bank, chairs BWPI's research.

BWPI provides research funding to a number of PhD and post-doctoral students as well as employing 4 established academic staff working on aspects of poverty. It organises research around five major themes:

Poverty Concepts and Poverty Knowledge

Methodological Development

Poverty Dynamics and Growth

Social Policy, Social Protection and Public Economics

Institutions and Governance
