South Shore High School was one of the two New York City public high schools in the neighborhood of Canarsie in Brooklyn. Opened in 1970, it had the capacity to educate four thousand students in grades nine through twelve. At the peak of enrollment, during the 1975-76 school year, the high school boasted a student population of 6,500, making South Shore the second largest high school in the United States. To accommodate the large capacity of students thirteen class periods were provided. The freshmen and sophomores were accommodated in the morning, while juniors and seniors were instructed in the afternoon.

South Shore High School participated in City University of New York's College Now program, which provided senior-year students the opportunity to take courses for college credit on the high school campus. The program was run in cooperation with Kingsborough Community College.

While South Shore High was relatively problem-free through the 1970's and most of the 1980's, there were a few incidents. Several student riots ocurred in the school's opening year, forcing its first principal, Max Bromer, to resign. A riot occurred outside of the school on the last day of classes in June 1987, one student was shot to death off campus in May of 1990, and a student was stabbed to death in a stairwell in September of 1992.

Because of increasing security problems, South Shore High School graduated its final class in June of 2007. Four smaller schools are now run on the campus.
