Bronisław Komorowski (pronounced [brɔˈɲiswaf kɔmɔˈrɔfskʲi]) (born April 4, 1952), is a Polish politician and former Polish minister of national defence. In 2005 to 2007 he was a vice-marshal of the Sejm - the lower chamber of the Polish parliament. On November 5, 2007 he was elected and took office of the Sejm Marshal.

He is a vice-chairman of Platforma Obywatelska.

[edit] Youth

He was born in Oborniki Śląskie in Komorowski count family crest of Korczak with strong independence and territorial trafitions. Komorowski is son of Zygmunt Leon count (1924-1993) and Jadwiga from Szalkowski (born in 1921). His family comes from terrains of present Lithuania, and Komorowski family by 200 years rulde Żywiecczyzna. In years 1957-1959 he lived in Józefowie near Otwock. From 1959 to 1966 in Pruszków, he attended to basic school there also. In 1966 he transferred to Warsaw and graduate XXIV highschool named Cyprian Kamil Norwid.

By many summers he was connected with scout movement. He belonged to 75th Mazovian Scout Team in Pruszków. During the studies he was scout instructor in 208 WDHiZ named Battalion "Umbrella" in detachment Mokotów. In scouting he got to know his future wife.

In 1977 he finished the studies on Historical Department of Varsovian University. In years 1977-1980 was at editing in " General Word".

[edit] Oppositional activity

At Polish People's Republic (PRL) he acted in democratic opposition as underground publisher, he co-operated with Antoni Macierewicz in monthly publication Voice. In 1980 sentenced with activists of Movement of Defence Say the Man together and the Citizen on 1 month of prison for organizing in day the demonstration of 11 November 1979 (the judge who presided the trial was Andrzej Kryże). 1980-1981 he worked in Centre of Social Investigations of NSZZ "Solidarity". He 27 September 1981 was one of signatories of the founder's declaration of Clubs Service Independence. Internee in time of war state. 1981-1989 he taught in Lower Seminar in Niepokalanów.

In years 1989-1990 he fulfilled the function of manager of the minister Alexander Hall's office , and in summers 1990-1993 - the civil vice minister of national defence in governments of: Tadeusz Mazowiecki, Jan Krzysztof Bielecki and Hanna Suchocka. In early 90s connected to Democratic Union and Freedom Union Unia Wolności. In summers 1993-95 he was general secretary in this parties.

As candidate of Democratic Union he got in elections in 1991 and 1993 Parliamentary mandate. In 1997, under end of duration of II term of office of Lower house, together with group of activists of UW under management of the Jan Rokita he created Koło Konserwatywno-Ludowe. In the same year Koło Konserwatywno-Ludowe attached to newly created Stronnictwo Konserwatywno Ludowe, which approached to Akcja Wyborcza Solidarność (AWS). In 1997 Komorowski won the parliamentary mandate as candidate of AWS. In years 1997-2000 he presided the parliamentarian Committee of National Defence, and in summers 2000-2001 in Jerzy Buzek government the minister of national defence. In 2001, yet as minister in minority government of AWS, Komorowski with part of activists of SKL become a member of Civic Platform. He was candidate to Lower house in IV term of office from this formation. Again he won Parliamentary mandate in Varsovian circle. After inauguration of new parliament he stepped out from SKL and he engaged in activity of Civic Platform. Since 2001 he has been the member of he National Civic Platform Board. At Lower house in IV term of office he was the deputy of chairman of parliamentarian Committee National Defence and the member of parliamentarian Committee of Foreign Matters.

In choices to Lower house V terms of office he again got the mandate, this time in circle near Warsaw. Chosen 26 October 2005 became the Vice Marschal of Lower house. For his candidature voted 398 Members of Parliament. His party earlier recommended him on candidate on marshal. His candidature, in defiance of earlier settlements, was throwed aside by Law and Justice (PiS) which chose Marek Jurek. It created unfavourable climate for more far conversations coalition PO-PiS

After resignation of Marek Jurek with function of marshal of Lower house 25 April 2007 Civic Platform notified Komorowski candidature on marshal of Lower house. 27 April 2007 Lower house threw aside his candidature, and candidate became new marshal from PiS Ludwik Dorn. For Komorowski voted 189 Members of Parliament.

Komorowski in choices to Lower house 21 October 2007 started from first place in Warsaw circle and he got 139 320 voices.

[edit] Marshal of Lower House

5 November 2007 on first session of Lower house of Polish Republic in VI term of office Bronisław Komorowski has been chosen by 292 voices on Marshal of Lower house. His rival was Krzysztof Putra from PiS who reached result 160 voices. Vice Marshals became Stefan Niesiołowski, Krzysztof Putra, Jarosław Kalinowski, Jerzy Szmajdziński.

Since 1977 he has been married to Anna Dembowska. He has got five children; Zofia Aleksandra, Tadeusz Jan, Maria Anna, Piotr Zygmunt and Elżbieta Jadwiga.
