The Brody museum of history and district ethnography is a museum in Brody, Ukraine, founded in 2001.

Museums in the Brody district have old traditions. Beginnings of it are found in the collections of Pidgircy castle (formed at the end of XVII-XVIII century), by collections of the count Vladimir Dzedushyckiy in the estate in Penyaki village (at the end of ХІХ century), by the private museum of pictures and ancient furnitures of proprietress of castle palace in Brody of the countess Zhyshchevska (at the beginning of ХХ century). Unfortunately, as a result of military years and social cataclysms the collection were nebulized on different cities and museums of Ukraine and other states, a lot of priceless artifacts were lost beyond retrieve.

The first district museum in Brody was created at the end of 1950s. It was in a one-story house on the street Velyki Filvarky. Collections of numismatists, collections of plain weapon, ceremonial objects were saved in a museum, documents ХІХ - beginning of the ХХ century, ethnography of region was widely presented. However, at the end of 1960s to beginning 1970s activity was halted, and considerable part of the exhibits disappeared. Soon the building of a musical school began in place of museum.

In 1979 under a museum part of apartments of house of the XVIII century was passed, in the walls of which from 1866 there was Brody district government to the year 1939. Between 1980-1984 a display was created and collection of exhibits passed. In September, 1984, within the framework of marking of 900 anniversary of the first written reference to Brody, the opening of the district museum of Brody took place. At first the establishment operated as a folk museum, and from April, 1 in 1991 became the department of Lvov historical museum. On March 29, 2001, on the base of the Brody historical and district ethnographical department of the Lviv historical museum, was created the Brody museum of history and district ethnography.

The museum display consists of 43 sections, built on the chronological principle in 7 halls. The history of the district is divided by themes:

  1. The most ancient times (from the Stone Age to the Kievan Rus)
  2. Polish days (from the end XІV-XVIII century)
  3. Region under the Austrian empire (1772 - 1918)
  4. The First World War (1914-1918), national liberation movements (1918-1919), Polish-Soviet War (in 1920);
  5. Inter-War period (1920-1939);
  6. World War Two (1939-1945), fight of OUN, UPA in Brody district (1940-50th).

Separately presented are «Nature of Brody district» and «Ethnography of district (from the end of XIX – beginning of XX century) ». The display is completed by a photogallery with the types of sights of history and culture of Brody district, panorama „Brody ХVІІ-ХVІІІ century”.

Activity of the known people the names of which are closely associated with the history of region is lighted in museum: І.Trush, М.Fedyuk, E.Lysyk (painters); I. Golovatskiy, J.Korzheniovskiy, T.Bordulyak, V.Hronovych, S.Тudor, J.Roth, L.Buchkovskiy (writers); of researches workers - V.Shtchurat (literary critic), J.Zastyrec (philosopher and philologist), О.Rozdolskiy (ethnographer), V.Yashtchun (slavist and translator), S.Barontch and І.Sozanskiy (historians); О.Vyslockiy and М.Osadca (publicmen of district); F.West (the Polish publisher); М.Тarnavskiy, О.Stepaniv, R.Кupchynskiy, J.Vassyyan, P.Fedun-Poltava (figures of national liberation competitions).

About 5,000 exhibits are saved in the museum. Among them there are archaeological sights (over 1500 items), collections of monies, signs, weapons, rewards, articles of folk culture and way of life, original pictures and documents. Materials include exhibits from history of the formation and battle actions of the legion of the Ukrainian Sich Riflemen, Ukrainian division «Galichina» (1st UD UNA), departments of UPA.

In sight of national value of ХVІІ-XVIII century – Brody castle are show-rooms of Brody museum of history and district ethnography. Here museums workers conduct exhibition activity, work above creation of constantly operating display from history of castle. The guides of Brody museum of history and district ethnography conduct surveying and thematic excursions by a display, by Brody castle, by historical-cultural sights of Brody and district. The museum is the organizer of searching-researches and ethnographic expeditions. The researches workers of establishment take part in the leadthrough of archaeological excavations, organize the district reading and conferences, give professional consultations.

Collection of postcard «Brody at the beginning of ХХ century», collection of historical photos «Ukrainian Sich Riflemen», «Small photoencyklopedia of Ukrainian Sich Riflemen» (in the collaboration with the Lviv researches workers), materials of district conference «Brody-920» are scientific reserves of Brody museum of history and district ethnography. Guide-book «Brody: the face of city» and booklet «Brody» are geared-up to the edition. Periodically in the local press district scientifically-cognitive secret services are published from history of region, the authors of which there are the workers of museum.
