[edit] News from Esperanza

Hello, fellow Esperanzians! This is just a friendly reminder that elections for Administrator General and two advisory council positions have just begun. Voting will last until Friday, December 30, so make sure you exercise your right to vote! Also, I'm pleased to announce the creation of the Esperanza mailing list. I urge all members to join; see Wikipedia:Esperanza/Contact for more information. All you need to do is email me and I will activate your account. This will be a great way to relax, stay in touch, and hear important announcements. Thanks! Flcelloguy <small>(A <font color="brown">note?</font>)</small>

<small> This message was delivered to all Esperanza members by our acting messenger, Redvers. If you do not wish to receive further messages, please list yourself at WP:ESP/S. Thanks. </small>

[edit] thanks for the thank-you note :)

Thanks for your kind words. In a controversial article like Fetal pain, it's hard to know how people will react to edits, so I appreciate your note. FreplySpang (talk) 23:12, 16 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] thanks for sorting out the SA Phone Plan merge

I proposed this then went away on holiday, so it was great to find it done when I got back. Colonies Chris 10:50, 21 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] CAoW

Since you are listed as a Roman Catholic, I figured I'd send you this. Wikipedia:Catholic Alliance of wikipedia has been nominated for Deletion. Please vote and/or tell other people to vote to keep this organization on wikipedia. --Shanedidona 01:30, 25 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Portal:Christianity

I recently "signed up" on the portal, but my name isn't showing up. Also, I'd like to caution you about Jason Gastrich. Every edit I've read of his, and his talk page (especially deleted entries) show a complete lack of NPOV. He seems to be a very hard line Fundamentalist and any contributions he makes will probably cause edit wars and arguments. Not trying to start anything here, but anytime I find an entry I like, I watch it and it's contributors, and this guy seems to be trouble. As the gaurdian of this portal, I just thought you needed the facts about Mr. Gastrich. --Icj tlc 16:35, 29 December 2005 (UTC)

This is probably a stupid question but, how can I join the Christianity Portal? Reply to my talk page. Thanks, --Josh777 03:23, 1 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] An Invitation

You are cordially invited to participate in WikiProject Christianity

The goal of WikiProject Christianity is to improve the quality and quantity of information about Christianity available on Wikipedia. WP:X as a group does not prefer any particular tradition or denominination of Christianity, but prefers that all Christian traditions are fairly and accurately represented.

Since you're the guardian of the Christianity Portal, I thought you might be interested in a related project. A.J.A. 22:01, 7 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Come and vote your mind

Dear Christian friend,

I saw you on the list of Christian Wikipedians and wanted to let you know about something. The other day, someone nominated 12 Christian biography entries for deletion! They include a Christian university list of people (not unlike 68 other lists like it)[1], presidents of universities, and authors of many books.

Since that time, people have been voting. Please take this message as a call to vote; not a call to vote a certain way. I respect you and your ability to come, read the entry, and make a wise decision. In other words, I’m not vote stacking or campaigning; simply letting you know something that you’d probably like to know.

By the way, my friend recently started an organization called Wiki4Christ. If you’d like to join a network of Christians with a purpose on Wikipedia, please see the site!

Below are some of the links that need attention. Thanks for your consideration.

[edit] An Esperanzial note

As I remember, the last spam that was handed out was on the 20th of December last year, so I think it's time for another update. First and foremost, the new Advisory Council and Administrator General have been elected. They consist of myself as Admin General and FireFox, Titoxd, Flcelloguy and Karmafist as the Advisory Council. We as a group met formally for the first time on the 31st of Decembe. The minutes of this meeting can be found at WP:ESP/ACM. The next one is planned for tonight (Sunday 29 January) at 20:30 UTC and the agenda can be found at WP:ESP/ACM2.

In other news, Karmafist has set up a discussion about a new personal attack policy, which it can be found here. Other new pages include an introductory page on what to do when you sign up, So you've joined Esperanza... and a welcome template: {{EA-welcome}} (courtesy of Bratsche). Some of our old hands may like to make sure they do everything on the list as well ;) Additionally, the userpage award program proposal has become official is operational: see Wikipedia:Esperanza/User Page Award to nominate a userpage or volunteer as a judge. Also see the proposed programs page for many new proposals and old ones that need more discussion ;)

Other than that, I hope you all had a lovely Christmas and wish you an Esperanzially good new WikiYear :D Thank you! --Cel<font color="green">e</font>stianpower háblame 16:57, 29 January 2006 (UTC) <br /><small>Message delivered by Rune.welsh using AWB. [edit] Another Esperanzial note...

Hi again Esperanzians! Well, since our last frolic in the realms of news, the Advisory Council has met twice more (see WP:ESP/ACM2 and WP:ESP/ACM3). As a result, the charter has been ammended twice (see here for details) and all of the shortcuts have been standardised (see the summary for more details). Also of note is the Valentines ball that will take place in the Esperanza IRC channel on the 14th of February (tomorrow). It will start at 6pm UTC and go on until everyone's had enough! I hope to see you all there! Also, the spamlist has been dissolved - all Esperanzians will now recieve this update "newsletter".

The other major notice I need to tell you about is the upcoming Esperanza Advisory Council Elections. These will take place from 12:00 UTC on February 20th to 11:59 UTC on February 27th. The official handing-over will take place the following day. Candidates are able to volunteer any time before the 20th, so long as they are already listed on the members list. Anyone currently listed on the memberlist can vote. In a change since last time, if you have already been a member of the leadership, you may run again. Due to the neutrality precident, I will not vote for anyone.

Yours, as ever, Esperanzially,<br /> --Cel<font color="green">es</font>tianpower háblame 09:00, 13 February 2006 (UTC)<br /> <small>(message delivered by FireFox using AWB on Celestianpower's behalf)</small>

[edit] Re: Portals browsebar listing

I don't consider Relegion to merely anything, but it is a branch of Philosophy all the same. Any efforts to enhance access to Relegion portals should be concentrated on Portal:Philosophy (although I understand any hesitation given that portal's peculiar layout). The "horrors of wrapping" statement referred to the fact the Wikipedia is accessed by all manner of screen resolutions, and to add religion to the already quite large bar will cause it to wrap (ie, split across lines) in even average resolutions. I doubt the bar could be reformatted to avoid wrapping without completely abandonning the aesthetic.--cj | talk 10:32, 6 March 2006 (UTC)

Hi Brizvegas. I just dropped by to let you know that I am trying to revive the Brisbane WikiProject of which you are a member. You may have recently noticed the suggested list of tasks on the project page. There’s also a new 'recent activity' section on the project talk page. You might like to add to the list any Brisbane related articles that you've been working on recently to encourage others to join in. If you have any comments on how to improve the project, please share them on the project talk page or on my talk page. I notice you're on Wikibreak so don't feel obliged to reply. Cheers. -- Adz|talk 06:37, 28 March 2006 (UTC)

The Barnstar Brigade is a new program aimed at giving more very deserving yet unappreciated users barnstars. It will officially start on 2006-04-09, but signing up is encouraged before this date:
"Here in Wikipedia, there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go un-appreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go un-noticed. Sadly, these editors often leave the project. As Esperanzians, we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. A project the size of Wikipedia has thousands of editors, so there are plenty of people out there who deserve recognition, one just has to find them. The object of this program is not to flood editors with Barnstars, but to seek out people who deserve them, and make them feel appreciated."

The Administrator Coaching program is a program aimed at preparing Wikipedians for Adminship or helping them understand the intricacies of Wikipedia better. Recently, changes have been made to the requirements of coachees. Please review them before requesting this service.
This would be something like the Welcoming Committee, but for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. Some might like suggestions about how to learn vandal patrol, or mentoring on taking an article to featured status, or guidance with a proposal they plan to make at the Village Pump, for example. Hi! Thank you very much for awarding me a barnstar... it is very much appreciated and a really nice feeling when someone takes the trouble to recognise and reward your work. Many thanks indeed - DJR <small>(Talk)</small> 10:11, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

[edit] BOWLBY PAGE

I would appreciate your intervention here. Sarner has begun a revert war about two listings in the "also see" section. In addtion, his comments, indicate that he will not mediate or discuss any solutions unless they are his desired final outcome....he seems to have no interest in trying to reach concensus or compromise. He seems to not be willing to let others comment and let a growing concensus direct the page. Instead, he seems bent on eliminating all references and material he has deemed unacceptable. DPeterson 17:18, 17 June 2006 (UTC)

I am disturbed by Mr. Sarner's reverts and his battle over two Also See links that, I believe, are fine to leave as being relevant and appropriate. I am also disturbed by his apparent battle to control the page as if his opinion is the only one. Many people disagree with him as the discussion page indicates. I hope you will step in for those of us who want peace and an end to his battles and endless arguing, as if he can beat us into submission. Thanks. MarkWood 21:20, 17 June 2006 (UTC)

Your intervention is needed asap. Sarner has ignored your request to leave the page as is until there is consensus and made unacceptable changes to the page. Sarner have begun to revet and make changes that do not represent consensus, collaboration, or cooperation with the mediation process. Your assistance is needed and will be appreciated. I have watched for a while and not participated until recently. I am very upset by his rigid insistance that everyone must agree with him and that anyone who does not is invalid for some reason or another. His false allegations are also distrubiing. Please make him stop. Dr. Becker-Weidman Dr. Art 22:28, 22 June 2006 (UTC)

I don't see how the suggestion by sarner can be useful or helpful. Must consensus mean EVERYONE agree, regardless of the validity of their position? (must we include flat earth supporters' comments in articles about earth? Mr. sarner has made clear his agenda to eliminate from wiki any references to Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy and related topics, despite the fact that this is an evidence based practice with extensive support in the professional community. His citations on his website and of his group make that clear. How would you suggest I manage this and respond? I'd appreciate your advice. Thank you.

24.48.176.65 11:34, 25 June 2006 (UTC) Dr. Art 11:35, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

Interesting that Mr Becker-Weidman has commented here rather than on the Bowlby talk page. I am not surprised that he rejects my proposal. He does have a rather interesting view of consensus, doesn't he? (Consensus isn't arrived at between disputants, it's arrived at by like-minded individuals.)

He loves to say that his beloved DDP is "evidence-based", but the evidence on which it is based is thin, scientifically weak, academically challenged, and not widely accepted clinically. I have valid grounds to dispute its inclusion in the article. Is this why he wants the decision on what goes into the article based on his view of "consensus" -- because his POV may not be able to prevail any other way?

I'm sorry this debate has come to your talk page instead of the Bowlby one. That it has, illustrates why I made the suggestion I did. The playing field is not very level under the groundrules you suggested. I make arguments, and I'm ignored. I make proposals, and they're ignored. The only time I can have any effect is when I attempt to influence the article itself. THEN I get attacked ad hominem.

This is a real challenge for a mediator, I know. As you pointed out, you have no power to enforce anything. But I hope you won't give up on us. I see you as a way to educate all of us in Wiki-ness and maybe (just maybe) find some unique way to resolve a dispute when the parties' positions are as polarized as ours.

(Would appreciate your response on the Bowlby talk page.)

Larry Sarner 18:05, 25 June 2006 (UTC)

It is difficult to have a discussion when the other person is so provocative and disrespectful and whose method of approach is to initiate personal attacks. Becker-Weidman is Dr. Becker-Weidman, as I read his publicaitons. sarner is needlessly provoking in his responses and not treating those who disagree with him with proper respect.

Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy is evidence-based in that there are several publications and peer-reviwed articles in professional journals. Again, sarner is showing his agenda as an advocate of ACT, which is a fringe group (at least if we use OED or Webster to define fringe). He is not a clinician or professional and is not aware of the abundant literature in support of DDP and it's principles. It is clinically accepted and based on sound solid evidence-based principles. For example, relationship is the most evidence-based component of psychotherapy...I won't cite here all the evidence support here, but can do that is it is desired. The approach is widely accepted in the clnical community. As I said on the talk page, I am very willing to discuss these issues, but we should see all of sarner's ideas at once. In addition, it is difficult to discuss these matters when sarner attacks everyone who does not agree with him or ACT.

I hope you will continue to stay invovled as your efforts have brought some civility and rationality to the debate and have halted the needless attacks and rigidity. Thank you.

DPeterson 00:11, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

I've read several (four) articles in peer reviewed professional journals and several books about this approach and find it credible. It is based on sound solid evidence based principles of treatment and basic accepted principles for the treatment of complex trauma. I think stating otherwise just ignores the facts and calls into question the knowledge base, expertise, and motives of Larry Sarner. In reviewing facts and material I do think the person's expertise does matter. I don't believe Sarner has a Ph.D., is a licensed mental health professional or has a degree in psychology, social work, marriage and family therapy, or any other directly related field. If I am wrong I will apprecite being corrected.

MarkWood 18:51, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

The evidence keeps mounting that user "DPeterson" is either really user "AWeidman" or a colleague at his clinic (either a sock puppet or a stalking horse). He shows up when Mr Becker-Weidman wants either to push himself, make arguments that would be too gauche to make himself, or wants to stuff the ballot box.

I don't intend to carry on the debate here on your talk page. That would be discourteous. I will say this much, however: the above arguments are advertising; they can and will be refuted. You or any visitor to your page can go to Bowlby talk page and follow the discussion there.

Larry Sarner 13:37, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

Gee, Larry Sarner sure seems angry. I've read his comments here and elsewhere and find his approach to be antagonistic and counter-productive. Why does he discount Dpeterson and others? I just don't think this is productive. Why are the arguments of DPeterson advertising? I think the comments about the therapy are appropriate. The comments present evidence and arguments and are to the point. He talks about ad hominem attacks, but that is exactly what he is doing in the previous comment. However, I do agree that the discussion may better occur on the bowlby page. The mediator should address this.

JonesRD 19:09, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

TO THE MEDIATOR: Again, I think your intervention is needed. Sarner should post all his ideas so that everyone can review them at once. His refusal to do so is clear building increased suspicion and recalcitrance and is not conducive to consensus building.

MarkWood 18:51, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

My sympathies to the mediator for the apparent misuse of his talk page by the other side. Larry Sarner 21:14, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

It appears that Sarner is not interested in building consensus or developing a cooperative and collaborative relationship with the other contributors. My sympathies to the mediator regarding this difficult problem.

66.238.223.87 21:55, 27 June 2006 (UTC)

I think it is time to implement the solution of the advocate and end this...it is just plain valueless to allow a zealot to hold hostage a page and to require to continue monitoring of several contributors. Don't you agree?

DPeterson 02:43, 2 July 2006 (UTC)

I wish I could, but this would not resolve the dispute. I have already offered a compromise where both DDT and Theraplay could be mentioned in the article, just not in the See Also section. I still believe this is the best way forward, although I respect the advicate's suggestion (keep in mind that it is his duty to be biased in favour of his client, while I am striving to listen to both sides). Brisv<font color="green">e</font><font color="red">gas</font> 03:00, 2 July 2006 (UTC)
I think that as far as sarner is concerned the dispute will never be resolved untill all references to DDP and Theraplay and all attachment-based treatments are removed from this and all other Wiki pages. The fact that he is so adament seems to bear this out, as well as the fact that he refuses to state all his proposed changes in one spot. Your suggestion will not end this and will only lead to sarner's continuing the "battle" elsewhere. I think the advocate's proposed solution is a good compromise, the best one, given sarner's secreacy and refusal to build consensus.

DPeterson 21:48, 2 July 2006 (UTC)

Interesting that "DPeterson" (whoever he is), with little or no Wikiquette, keeps spilling over this debate into other venues where it is inappropriate. Rude. In addition, these ex parte conversations with a mediator are hardly in the Wiki spirit of openness. But, of course, whenever I point either of these out, I am accused of trying to change the subject. Larry Sarner 17:08, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

I'd have to agree with many of the comments and questions of others here. It does appear that sarner's continued personal attacks and unfounded allegations suggest that he does not have a real interest in consensus building and collaboration. It appears that he will not tolerate any disagreement with his POV and acts as if he must rub out POV and comment he disagrees with. Differences can remain as differences for the page reader to sort out. Yes? MarkWood 21:45, 8 July 2006 (UTC)

Look at the size of this section! Every one of these comments belonging on the Bowlby talk page and not here. The same was done to the mediation request page!! I can't blame the mediator for resigning. Good luck to you, sir. Larry Sarner 06:39, 9 July 2006 (UTC)

[edit] A short Esperanzial update

As you may have gathered, discussions have been raging for about a week on the Esperanza talk page as to the future direction of Esperanza. Some of these are still ongoing and warrant more input (such as the idea to scrap the members list altogether). However, some decisions have been made and the charter has hence been amended. See what happened. Basically, the whole leadership has had a reshuffle, so please review the new, improved charter.

As a result, we are electing 4 people this month. They will replace JoanneB and Pschemp and form a new tranche A, serving until December. Elections will begin on 2006-07-02 and last until 2006-07-09. If you wish to run for a Council position, add your name to the list before 2006-07-02. For more details, see Wikipedia:Esperanza/June 2006 elections.

If you need help with archiving your usertalk, for example, all you need to do is list it here and somebody will help you out. Likewise, if you need help with some area of editing on Wikipedia, list it here! Again, any matter, trivial or not, can be placed on this page. However, all matters listed on this page must not be of an argumentative nature. You do not need to be a member of Esperanza (or this program) to place or fulfill requests on this page. If you don't have any requests, consider coming by and fulfilling a few! This program has not been very active, but has lots of potential!

Proposals that are promising, but need to be organized in more detail are listed here. Please take a look at what is there, and help the proposals turn into programs.
To improve both the layout and text of the front page, in an attempt to clarify the image of Esperanza, the front page is going to have some redesigning take place. Please take your creative minds to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Front page redesign to brainstorm good ideas.

Here in Wikipedia there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. As Esperanzians we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. This is where the Barnstar Brigade comes in. The object of this program is to seek out the people which deserve a Barnstar, and help them feel appreciated. With your help, we can recognize more dedicated editors!
<div style="margin: 0; background:#cef2e0; font-family: sans-serif; font-size:120%; font-weight:bold; border:1px solid #a3bfb1; text-align:left; color:#000; padding-left:0.4em; padding-top: 0.2em; padding-bottom: 0.2em;">What's New?</div>
September elections are upon us! Anyone wishing to be a part of the Advisory Council may list themselves as a candidate from 18 September until 24 September, with the voting taking place from 25 September to 30 September. Those who wish to help with the election staff should also list themselves!
Appreciation Week, a program currently in development, now has its own subpage! Share your good ideas on how to make it awesome there!
The Esperanza front page has been redesigned! Many thanks to all who worked hard on it.

  1. The proposals page has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  2. Since the program in development Appretiaion week is getting lots of good ideas, it now has its own subpage.
  3. The September 2006 Council elections will open for nominations on 18 September 2006. The voting will run from 25 September 2006 until 30 September 2006. If you wish to be a candidate or a member of the elections staff, please list yourself!
  4. The new Esperanza front page design has but put up - many thanks to all who worked on it!
  5. TangoTango has written a script for a bot that will list new members of Esperanza, which will help those who welcome new Esperanzains greatly!

Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

[edit] Aust PM timeline

Hi there! Firstly, let me say how well designed Template:Timeline Australian PM is. I have put it on the 1975 election page as the first of wiki articles of modern day Australian politics. One thing I notice though, and I do notice you did code it correctly (ALP), but why does Chris Watson in 1904 not show up as red despite being marked as ALP in the coding? I take heed of the notice you are not currently on WP, so if I don't get a reply in the short future I will know why. Please reply on my talk page so I read it :-) Timeshift 14:46, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

McEwen has his green NAT stripe tho, and was PM for less than a month after Holt's disappearance. Ah well, if its a technical issue, nothing much I can do. As for Rudd, the Libs will resort to anything to stay in power so it will be one dirty year, but Rudd's in the best position an opposition leader has been for decades! Did you know on the ACNeilson approval rating for opposition leader in the 35 years of their polling, Rudd, Fraser and Hawke are the top 3 - and which of those two were brought in with sweeping majorities? (and that was before electoral reform!) Timeshift 06:51, 10 March 2007 (UTC)
Over a year? According to his page, he was in office December 19, 1967 – January 10, 1968, which is less than one month... Timeshift 07:13, 10 March 2007 (UTC)
Unfortunately I don't know how to. I'll explore a bit. Timeshift 13:08, 10 March 2007 (UTC)

"Hopefully Kevin Rudd will be on the end of the graph by the end of the year" - was it ever in doubt? :D Timeshift (talk) 03:49, 29 December 2007 (UTC)

I don't hold much hope unfortunately. I went from Labor to Greens this election myself. Tons better than Howard though. Timeshift (talk) 11:46, 9 January 2008 (UTC)

  • There are currently five article being peer reviewed by the peer review team. Please stop by and see if there is any way that you could contribute to those articles.
  • It has been proposed by John Carter that the various other projects which relate to Christianity ought to all at least tag those articles which fall within their scope. That way, this project would have a better idea which articles do not fall within the specific scope of any of the other related projects. Articles can be "tagged" by placing {{ChristianityWikiProject}} in the articles talk page.

[edit] Copyright violation in Adrianne Pope

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Adrianne Pope, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Adrianne Pope is unquestionably copyright infringement, and no assertion of permission has been made.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Adrianne Pope, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. Thanks for uploading Image:Tivo GSoD.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 12:20, 10 May 2008 (UTC)
