It's also a good idea to sign the new user log and add a little about yourself.

When contributing to a talk page, you can sign your name by typing four tildes after your comments, like this: ~~~~. (Just so you know, some people won't pay attention to unsigned comments).

Thanks for moving my Sam Kelley, M.D. article to Sam Kelley, I was going to have to wait a few days! Proath01 01:52, 8 April 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Site Gallery, Sheffield ("This article lacks information on the importance of the subject matter")

Hello Brim, I added a few more details, what do you think? Wikityke 02:01, 11 January 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Duke/U.S. News Rankings

Just of curiosity, where did you find all those historical U.S. News and World Report college rankings? I'm curious about how the rankings of different schools have changed over the years. Best, JTM 19:24, 18 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Medical contribs

Hi Brim, thanks for starting Libman-Sacks endocarditis and all those anatomical articles. Your contributions suggest a medical background, or have you craftily Googled this together? Would you be interested in joining WikiProject "Clinical Medicine"? We urgently require people with a surgical background to update surgery-related pages on the project. JFW | T@lk 12:53, 23 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for your message. Please keep me posted about the Wikibook. This sounds fantastic. Can I occasionally ask you to review oncology-related articles for me? For example, can you find any factual inaccuracies in gastrointestinal stromal tumor (GIST)?
Wiki is fun - it can greatly improve English writing style for informed lay audiences about technical subjects! JFW | T@lk 09:46, 24 Sep 2004 (UTC)

[edit] Kallmann syndrome source

Hi Brim. By any chance, do you remember the source for this edit to Kallmann syndrome? I found some documents with similar text, but nothing exact. Thanks. Charm © 15:20, Jan 1, 2005 (UTC)

It's compiled from several medical textbooks. I believe I used Harrison's Textbook of Medicine and Cecil's Essentials of Medicine. — Brim 11:37, Jan 2, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Cancer - your fixing of wikilink to 'United States'

Brim,

I had intended for the passage to read as follows:

...purports to be the "the [United States'] leading charity in the field of diet, nutrition and cancer", supporting...

The brackets were not meant to indicate a wikilink but an replaced phrase in the original quotation.

I hope you don't mind my reverting your change. I do appreciate your vigilance and actions on behalf of the article.

Regards,

Courtland (user Ceyockey ... who doesn't have a page yet himself)

That's fine. It was a little confusing since the syntax looks so similar to an incorrectly-done Wikilink, but I understand what you were trying to say. — Brim 06:57, Jan 20, 2005 (UTC)

Oops, I must have been asleep. Improved the wording now. Thanks for informing me. Nichalp 10:30, Feb 7, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Work

Brim, you're doing some great work. Sadly, the few doctors on the project are not collaborating much at the moment. Some of last year's stars have encountered busy spells (although User:Erich gasboy edits occasionally).

Are you in the UK? Where are you based? Please email me if this is too personal for a talk page :-) JFW | T@lk 21:44, 8 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Thank you for the kind words. I am a resident (in radiation oncology) in the United States. My main project currently is my Radiation Oncology textbook, still in its infancy, over at Wikibooks. I still try to contribute to general medical articles when somethings pops in my head. Unfortunately I've had little time to write articles from scratch, but I've been trying to fix up articles and put articles in their appropriate categories. — Brim 21:55, Feb 8, 2005 (UTC)

w00t, I've just started a combined Haematology/Oncology job. I'm a senior house officer (= junior resident) hoping to do gastroenterology when I grow up :-) JFW | T@lk 22:12, 8 Feb 2005 (UTC)

I actually had you penned for an endocrinologist, thanks to the number of endocrine articles you've written or contributed to. — Brim 22:29, Feb 8, 2005 (UTC)
Ugh, I've also done a lot of haematology stuff (especially coagulation). Thanks for your input on cervical cancer. Have a look at the talk page... JFW | T@lk 07:33, 11 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Misuse of Template:unencyclopedic

Brim, kindly familiarize yourself with Wikipedia:WikiProject_Music/Notability_and_Music_Guidelines and allow articles created to expand before immediate use of this template. The DJ Icey article was created today, its 4th edit was your inclusion of this template, many of our articles require several days and or weeks to become a well rounded article. How would you like it if someone did the same to one of your brand new medical submissions, most people know nothing about specialized medicine and would likely say Wikipedia is not a Medical Library or some other such nonsense. A simple google of "DJ Icey" returns 42,100 results which shows his notability. In the future would you please at least use google first? You sorta jumped the gun on this one.

- Thanks  ALKIVAR 20:21, 23 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Alkivar, I apologize for jumping the gun on this one. At the time of my edit, the article was stubby and was written in the tone and style that's common with so many "vanity" pages created for unknown local artists. The article made no mention of notability. You're right that I should have at least Googled it before making the decision to name it encyclopedia. I appreciate your bringing this error to my attention. — Brim 20:32, Feb 23, 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Vandalism of articles

In the future, please do not vandalise articles which others are in the process of creating. If you have concerns over vanity or determining the status of someone who is otherwise an "unknown" to you, please make use of the many tools at your disposal, such as Google or an appropriate lookup database for that figure. Also, if you believe something to be non-encyclopedic, be sure to state why on the discussion page to preemptively prevent an edit war.

Another suggestion would be to politely contact the original contributing author if the first edits were freshly made in the past 60 minutes. GRider\talk 20:59, 23 Feb 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Campbell-Stokes recorder

Should it not be "Stokes'" as in Stokes' law and Stokes' theorem? CambridgeBayWeather 05:00, 25 October 2005 (UTC)

It seems to be a matter of preference. Most grammar books I've consulted favor adding 's to any singular word ending in s (e.g. Tess -> Tess's) and adding an apostrophe alone to a plural word ending in s (e.g. boys -> boys'). However, certain historical names ending in a sibilant s (Jesus, Moses) add only an apostrophe in the possessive to become Jesus', Moses'. To me, both ways are proper. Interestingly, if you go to the category Category:Eponymous laws and search for "s'" you'll see that about half use 's and the other half uses s' (I didn't count the actual numbers). —Brim 05:12, 25 October 2005 (UTC)
I see what you mean. CambridgeBayWeather 05:43, 25 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit] X rays and implants

Dear Brim,

The silicone used in an implant is a mixture of C, H and Si. This is different to silicon which is the pure element. Please could you recalculate for the silicone, I estimate that the empirical formula of the gel in an implant is likely to be (C2H6Si)n. Please also could you tell me where you got the table for the X-ray properties of different materials from.Cadmium 17:05, 9 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Emergency department

I wonder if you would consider supporting this article by voting for it at Wikipedia:Article Improvement Drive to improve it towards feature article status. I hope to increase the profile of clinical medicine and related subjects on wikipeda. The current article is basic, in particular with regards to EDs around the world.--File Éireann 20:42, 13 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Capitalization

Since these articles are the names of medicale conditions, wouldn't they be capitalized? I was under the impression that these are proper names...thanks for the help bcatt 19:30, 18 November 2005 (UTC)

Per the capitalization issue for the heart defects -- I went ahead and deleted the redirect so I could move the page. But I think there still might be some extra copies of heart defect pages or pages in the wrong location -- I'm having trouble figuring out exactly what is where. In any case, though, I'm an admin, so if there's any way I can help out, just let me know. --Arcadian 21:09, 18 November 2005 (UTC)

I find that Special:Allpages/name_of_article is useful for finding if there are similar article names with different spellings or capitalizations. —Brim 21:24, 18 November 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Thailand Articles

Thanks for catching those copyvios on those Thailand articles; I think a few of us were overlapping our efforts to clean things up. I was in the processing of giving them more appropriate names when I noticed you had begun to mark them copyvio, so I'll hold off on doing anything else in the meantime. Thanks. Peyna 07:20, 2 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Legiopedia

I deleted this article but for the reason that it met CSD A1. Please don't just put "non-notable" with a db| because it is not one of the criteria listed on WP:CSD and therefore no admin should delete for that reason. Thanks. gren グレン 12:01, 3 December 2005 (UTC)

The same goes for Non trivial. It has to be voted for transwiki on AfD for a dict-def to be automatically deleted. gren グレン 12:05, 3 December 2005 (UTC)

[edit] Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Posterior nucleus

[edit] Zander Vaubel

In regards to your warning about notability: He has been written about in three news sources thus far, including the The New York Times and the New York Daily News. The subject definitely passes on verifiability. --Howrealisreal 23:12, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Notability (people) is not Wikipedia guideline. Even so, under the Alternative tests heading it lists Verifiability, which states: "Can all information in the article be independently verified now? (some say) 10 years from now?" The answer to both is yes. The subject is notable because it is verifiable. It was already judged for its notability when it was originally reported in credible well-known news sources. The point of Wikipedia is to be NPOV and chronicle the facts from sources like those; why should we place subjective restrictions on things that are already established as notable? If so, there is a slippery slope, and established information that some editors don't like can be censored for being "not notable enough?" Wikipedia is not censored for any reason. Regards --Howrealisreal 03:50, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
So much for discussion, you've already tagged it for AfD! --Howrealisreal 03:53, 12 October 2006 (UTC)
I just wanted to let you know that as some time has passed, there has been a lot more coverage of Zander Vaubel's death. There's even a Robert Longo exhibit dedicated to him. [1] (In case you don't know, he's a notable artist too.) I don't understand your impulsive rush to evaluate topics while their articles are still in development. You didn't even try to discuss my concerns with your notability tag, you just jumped to place it on AfD. I understand that wikipedia has rules and ways of doing things, but you seem to be on a power trip to see how many articles you can delete without even trying to know more about the subject. --Howrealisreal 02:39, 27 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] prod

When you add the prod template to an article, like you did NASCAR Sim Online you need to subst the template, basically adding the template with:

  • {{subst:prod|REASON}}

rather than:

  • {{prod|REASON}}

That way it displays properly and categorises in the prods by date categories. I hope that explanation makes sense. If you don't subst the template, it looks like this, which isn't pretty. :) Steve block Talk 18:44, 13 October 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Unspecified source for Image:Wooden Award trophy.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Wooden Award trophy.jpg. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then you need to specify who owns the copyright, please. If you got it from a website, then a link to the website where it was taken from with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher then their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. [edit] Redirect of WFSS-FM

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on WFSS-FM, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because WFSS-FM is a redirect to a non-existent page (CSD R1).

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting WFSS-FM, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. [edit] Speedy deletion of Maui Tacos

A tag has been placed on Maui Tacos requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a company or corporation, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for companies and corporations.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines.
