[edit] Welcome
Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:
- The five pillars of Wikipedia
- How to edit a page
- Help pages
- Tutorial
- How to write a great article
- Manual of Style
Here are some other hints and tips:
- I would recommend that you get a username. You don't have to log in to read or edit articles on Wikipedia, but creating an account is quick, free and non-intrusive, requires no personal information, and there are many benefits of having a username. (If you edit without a username, your IP address is used to identify you instead.)
- When using talk pages, please sign your name at the end of your messages by typing four tildes (~~~~). This will automatically produce your username (or IP address) and the date.
If you have any questions, check out Wikipedia:Where to ask a question, ask me on my Talk page, or type {{helpme}} on this talk page and a user will help you as soon as possible. I will answer your questions as far as I can. Again, welcome!
Thank you again for contributing to Wikipedia. I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian.Sonic3KMaster(talk) 08:16, 28 August 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Welcome 69.6.162.160
I moved the above from User talk:69.6.162.160 which now redirects to this page. If you have any problem with any of this, say something and I'll change it to what you feel is appropriate. Thanks for joining the Wikipedia community. Communication is really important. So I also added a subsection to Template talk:Flu to tell peaople what's going on. Take care. See you around the 'pedia! - Thanks, I've been signing in, lately, thinking it might be helpful to me. BTW, I didn't want to use my personal email, but I think maybe an anonymous one I have may work.Brian Pearson 01:36, 16 November 2006 (UTC)Brian Pearson

- A few things, if I may be so bold as to presume to play teacher ... The use of ":" at the beginning of a line indents. "::" indents twice. And so on. Such indents say to others that you are responding to an edit with one less indent. It's helpful mostly with several people all talking at once. Use of four of these "~" at the end of a comment on a talk page signs and dates. Or is the comment about "blue" on my talk page about something else?? WAS 4.250 06:03, 16 November 2006 (UTC)

I can not imagine your reasoning behind this. WAS 4.250 06:17, 16 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Transclusion
Please read up on Transclusion. WAS 4.250 06:41, 16 November 2006 (UTC)
- Thanks, I read it. I'm tired to I'll have to read it, again. My reasoning? I just thought to myself, "Why (for example) have a the link, H5N1 on the same page as H5N1?" I'm sure the transclusion idea has good reasoning behind it. Thanks for the link.69.6.162.160 01:13, 17 November 2006 (UTC)Brian Pearson
[edit] moved link on vespids to Vespid page
Hi. Thanks for the contribution, but it is not suitable for the Wasp article - it belongs on the Vespid article, and I have moved it there. Peace, Dyanega 22:57, 5 March 2007 (UTC)
[edit] FairTax
Brian, Can I get your assistance on the FairTax article. The article is being attacked with NPOV banners, FA reviews, etc. I think we need another voice. Morphh (talk) 0:39, 13 August 2007 (UTC)
[edit] President Reagen
I'll take a look at the dispute later tonight, sure. -- Cielomobile talk / contribs 21:09, 26 August 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Towns and cities
I saw your comment about towns and cities and incorporation on a talk page that I have watchlisted. I am not exactly sure how Texas settlements are set up but in Illinois there are three types of municipal incorporation, village, town and city. For the Illinois Wikiproject we have categorized them according to their legal status as municipalities. Thus, Category:Cities in Illinois, Category:Towns in Illinois and Category:Villages in Illinois. Now as far as unincorporated communities we had a lengthy discussion about this and in the end decided to add them to Category:Unincorporated communities in Illinois. Since they are each wholly different entities we figured that was the most logical way to do it. The parent category is Category:Settlements in Illinois. Hope that helps. IvoShandor 23:57, 29 August 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks, I found the unincorporated list under counties. Oddly enough, the town of Guthrie is the county seat (King County) even though the town is not incorporated. Brian Pearson 00:50, 30 August 2007 (UTC)
- Categories are added to individual articles by listing the category at the bottom of the article page. Simply list add a category, for instance Towns in Texas, by typing [[Category:Towns in Texas]] at the bottom of the article. Hope that helps. IvoShandor 01:49, 30 August 2007 (UTC)
- The only difference is legally, the type of incorporation, how the settlement is run, etc. It is strictly a legal definition. City of Dallas, Town of Bobville, etc... IvoShandor 04:33, 2 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Trillions and Trillions and Trillions
It's just that talking about trillions of dollars somehow boggles my mind. I am probably dating myself, but I remember when a $billion was a huge amount! Normxxx —Preceding unsigned comment added by Normxxx (talk • contribs) 01:30, 1 September 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Re Check
Will do. I think the secret of why Wikipedia is evolving in the right direction and most of the troglodytes give up is just that everyone eventually tires of re-re-reading the same old stuff. [edit] Iran-Contra
Brian, I was thinking of archiving the discussion that we had on the subject in the Reagan Discussion page, simply because it seems concluded, and you and I were the only participants. It would be nice to moe the block of convo there to maintain some continuity with the rest of the talk. It's so fun to try to reason with Reaganaut True Believers like Spoon and Paul - how do you argue that the sun is in fact warm when they argue that it is simply too cold in space for the sun to be warm at all. Where do all these people come from? - Arcayne (cast a spell) 05:12, 14 September 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Cakewalk like an Egyptian
Er, were you referring to the trimming down and refocusing of the main article, or the DR stuff? - Arcayne (cast a spell) 22:18, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
- The refocusing part. I was thinking it could end up being a re-write. Brian Pearson 22:38, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
- Sorry, an old song. The lead singer, Susanna Hoffs was very cute to a little kid like me in the 80's...oh, never mind. lol - Arcayne (cast a spell) 23:18, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Texas Area Codes
I noticed on this map [2] showed Cottle county and others to have area code 940. I'm certain that Cottle county and others nearby have the 817 area code, though I'm not sure about where one starts and the other ends, but this map [3] may be a little closer to what it really is. Brian Pearson 00:57, 23 September 2007 (UTC)
- Looking at this entry on Whitepages.com shows that Cottle County is in area code 806. I looked at the area code 940 page and Cottle county is not present there. In fact, that's probably where I got the list of counties for each area code. Nor does Whitepages show Cottle county in area code 817. So I'm not sure what the problem is. The map is not perfect, it's a rough drawing for approximation purposes (I am working on a better one but it's not ready yet), which is why the printed list of cities and counties is supposed to be definitive in case the map is slightly off. - Gentlemen, perhaps I can be of some assistance. This link might be able to assist you in determining what town/etc. applies to a specific area code. Just type in the area code, hit 'return' and go through the list. I certainly hope that helps. :) - Arcayne (cast a spell) 07:04, 23 September 2007 (UTC)
- I suppose there could be some counties that are divided. Hopefully the updated map won't be confusing, though as Arcayne has suggested, most people can just look it up easily enough in other places. Brian Pearson 23:02, 23 September 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Clarendon College Texas, (un)categorisation
I don't see anything that looks like a category on that article: you're sure you not thinking of either external or internal links? You do have to remove the 'uncat' tag explicitly -- it's not programmed to self-destruct, or anything so ingenious as that. At a rough guess, I'd imagine you might want Category:Universities and colleges in Texas, and perhaps a "by-county" category. Let me know if I can help further (ideally at my own talk page, if you would). Alai 02:57, 24 September 2007 (UTC)
- What I did was remove the categorization temporarily, to see why it wasn't working. I followed your advice, removed the tag, then replaced the categories, modeling them after another college. I see the city, Clarendon, Texas is red. When I click on it, I get a message saying there is no such category. Brian Pearson 04:02, 24 September 2007 (UTC)
- I don't quite follow: as I say, there was no categorisation to remove. Are you by any chance adding categories in the wikitext, and then previewing without saving? Unfortunately, that doesn't work: they don't show up, whether they exist or not. Be very handy if it did, mind you. However, links to categories are previewable, which is a useful trick when trying to play "guess the category name", without actually looking it up. Places like Clarendon (which would be "small towns" hereabouts) wouldn't generally have categories, that's why I suggested a county-level category. I'm unlikely to check by here again, so as I say, if I can be of any further assistance, best to leave a message at my talk page. Alai 04:10, 24 September 2007 (UTC)
On the title: if the full name is just "Clarendon College", and the "Texas" is just there for disambiguation, perhaps it should be at Clarendon College (Texas). If it's an optional but sometimes used descriptor, perhaps Clarendon College, Texas. If the two colleges are roughly equally prominent, the same is perhaps true of the Jamaican one, and Clarendon College should be a disambig. Alai 05:03, 24 September 2007 (UTC)
- Ok, I've decided to change it to Clarendon College, Texas. When I click the edit button, I don't see it. But that's a problem for Monday... Brian Pearson 05:09, 24 September 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Ronald Reagan
Brian Pearson, as a fellow dedicated editor I am asking you to watchlist and contribute to the discussions going on at Talk:Ronald Reagan. There's an issue of Reagan's nicknames - "The Great Communicator" and "the teflon president" - being mentioned but more specifically the style/tone/prose. You can see it in the second paragraph at Ronald Reagan#Popularity. Then there's the issue of Reagan's Cold War legacy, part I here and part II here. Any contributions are greatly apprecited. Thanks, Happyme22 (talk) 06:03, 25 January 2008 (UTC)
