[edit] Hudson Taylor
Hi Brian; thanks for your edits to Hudson Taylor. I noticed that you have been adding alot of "red" links to the article; that is, linking people who do not have articles on Wikipedia. Normally, that's fine, so long as the person whose name you are linking deserves a Wikipedia article. Wikipedia has guidelines for determining whether or not someone should have an article, but in general, linking people like Grace Dyer Taylor (Taylor's first surviving daughter) is a waste, because she isn't notable except for the fact that she was related to Hudson Taylor. Even Taylor's wife doesn't deserve a link, unless she herself did something spectacular. Hope these comments help. If you have any questions about how Wikipedia works, feel free to leave a note on my talk page; I'd be happy to help you out. Thanks again for your work! --Spangineer[es] (háblame) 21:01, 15 June 2006 (UTC)
- In that case, you're probably right, and you've touched on an important test of notability—that if biographers have devoted significant amounts of print to someone's life, they may warrant an article. --Spangineer[es] (háblame) 21:22, 15 June 2006 (UTC)
- This is an afterthought, but if every charcter that ever appeared in The Simpsons and Thomas the Tank Engine has a 35+ kilobyte article...how do you really draw the line in Wikipedia???Brian0324 17:36, 12 January 2007 (UTC)
- Ah the joys of popular culture. For some reason that I only partially understand, human beings spend an inordinate amount of time focusing on the here and now. So it seems that everyone is creating websites and writing wikipedia articles for Simpsons characters and Pokemon characters and other largely useless things. Meanwhile, not as many people are writing books about the lesser known but definitely more important people that had an impact on history, and fewer still are writing Wikipedia articles based on those books. It's called systemic bias, and it's something that Wikipedia is never going to fully eliminate. We're always going to be biased toward current events, American/English/Australian/Indian topics, and technology/science. However, to be fair, most of our readers have similarly short attention spans (What! There was life before I was born?) and thus having gigabytes of information on minor plot characters might actually be helpful, or at least interesting, to some people.
- Sorry for the diatribe—I came to answer a simple question and got sidetracked. Anyway, I don't have immediate access to a biography of Hudson Taylor; to source the article I just used the claims made on the website I added early in the article's development. I imagine that it is verifiable (number of churches he worked with, number of people per church around that time, etc.), so we ought to be able to find a more reliable source to back it up. --Spangineerws (háblame) 02:47, 27 January 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Fair use images
Please take a look at WP:FUC, especially point 8. An image of a book cover can't be used as an illustration of a person, just as an illustration of the book. I have contacted Lars Gren and will be contacting Steve Saint soon to see if they have images of the men that they might release. Also, do you have any sources for the information you added to the Jim Elliot article? I'd like to get that article to featured status over the next month, and it can't have any unreferenced information in it if that is to happen. --Spangineerws (háblame) 16:53, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
Glad to hear that you may be able to get a portrait for both men. I added the references that I know of. I will try and look up the missing page numbers and add it soon. Thanks for you input!Brian0324 17:20, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
- I got the Brainerd reference (page 109 in my version), but I couldn't find Muller. Also, there's mention on page 109 about Taylor's other books. I'd like to incorporate these somehow into the flow of the article (rather than have a separate section on all the authors he read), but we'll see. --Spangineerws (háblame) 17:38, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
- That's great! I don't have the book handy right now. I agree that it disrupts the flow. I'll let you re-write.Brian0324 17:40, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
[edit] Mari/Mary Jones
Hi, Brian. I've moved Mari Jones back to "Mary Jones (Bible) for now, because she is never called Mari Jones by non-Welsh speakers. Although I can understand the reasons you made the change, you didn't format the redirect properly, so it didn't work. If you feel strongly about the title, then please put in a Move request and we can have a debate about it. Deb 17:57, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
Thankyou Brian for creating this interesting article. GeeJo kindly nominated it for DYK. The majority of entries are self-nom, so please don't be shy.Blnguyen (bananabucket) 07:11, 4 December 2006 (UTC)
Hi, Brian. I agree that we should "translate" honour into owner, but I think it would be more interesting to put both spellings in and explain about why she wrote it that way. Deb 18:22, 4 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] White Devil
You still haven't provided any context to the Manga. It's impossible to tell if it's a tribute or a criticism, and the title certianly implies criticism. Perhaps you might want to summarize it in the description and have it be part of the other books about him.
- Thanks for the input. Much appreciated. If there is more than one person who was unclear about it, then it must be confusing as it was. I have changed the caption and provided context in the article.Brian0324 15:01, 22 December 2006 (UTC)
[edit] William Chalmers Burns Photo
Sorry about reverting to the old "mug shot"; when I saw the original entry, there was no image (as if it was deleted).... I've now reverted your picture (wide hips, eh?; tell that to a woman dressed like that, and the umbrella might be positioned for a prostate exam!)... I've had the oppertunity to read of his Canadian exploits in recent weeks; while his uncle (who followed John Witherspoon at St George's Church, Paisley) remained in Canada (see Knox Presbyterian Church (Toronto) ), was responsible for a few Burns' Presbyterian Church (or in a few cases since 1925, Burns United Church) here in Canada. There are others named after WC, and likely a few folks who figured they were named after...C. Montgomery Burns (as illustrated)--hopefully, we won't have to rv any of that picture from the article! Happy 2007! Bacl-presby 20:03, 29 December 2006 (UTC)

[edit] Hudson Taylor
Hello,
An honest mistake, but this bot capitalized "catholic" in the Hudson Taylor article. The quote was referring to him being a universal Christian as opposed to a "Catholic" in the Roman Catholic sense. This could be a problem if the bot is always capitalizing this word that is not a proper noun in itself.Brian0324 14:59, 9 March 2007 (UTC)
- Ah, thank you for that. I'm aware of the distinction between Catholic (the religion) and catholic (as in 'of the people'), but I guess I've misidentified its use once too many times. I think I'll take it off my bot's list of rules. Cheers, CmdrObot 20:02, 9 March 2007 (UTC)

- I did a quick search online but couldn't clarify it. It would be a good guess that he was a Roman Catholic - Jesuit maybe? Not that it would have been impossible - but a Portuguese Protestant during that time period would have been rare.Brian0324 13:36, 26 March 2007 (UTC)

I notice you specify an interest in Puritans. Is there any chance you could do the tagging for Category:Puritanism (see Tagging drive)? [edit] WikiProject Calvinism news
Hi. I'm recommending to all participants in WikiProject Calvinism that they keep up with at least the News page ({{Wikipedia:WikiProject Calvinism/News}}) for this project. The methods I'd recommend for doing this are any or all of:
- Add the abovementioned page to your watchlist
- Include the page on another page you look at regularly; in my case, this is my user page, since I keep my personal "todo" list there. That would look something like:
Last change: 2007/12/12
All the Calvinism-related news that is news from across the encyclopedia

We have updated the look of the project and corrected some things like the collaboration to reflect the reality on the ground. Check it out and get involved!

[edit] Baptist Template
Hello Brian,
Thanks for expanding the template to include other things. Not being a Baptist meant that I was loathe to remove things like Anglicanism. I'd probably remove the Sola Scriptura one since many Baptists (especially non-SBC Baptists) don't adhere to it. (I adhere to it, but that's another matter!)
When searching for an image to use, I was trying to find something contemporary that identified what Baptists did. The image of a man and another man in the water together in the pose that I found is a quite identifiable image of baptists. In my opinion, the problem with the image of Jesus and John you've put in is that it doesn't adequately represent what a Baptist is. Yes its essentially the same "type" of image but it doesn't communicate exactly what Baptists can be seen to do. The image could quite easily be used by another Christian denomination - even Catholics.
This is not to say that the image I put in was brilliant - far from it. But I'd like to somehow modify the image into an svg file that is brighter and simpler and more of an "image" or symbol than a photo.
I thought about using this image at Wikicommons but the mitred bishop would have confused people. I also thought of using This image which is actually brilliant but it was deleted from Wiki because of copyright issues.
I'll try to modify the photo and turn it into an svg image. Until then, we might as well keep the image you put in.
Many thanks! --One Salient Oversight 23:50, 3 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] From Timotius
You are doing a great job to get the history of Protestant Christian missionary work more widely known. I do not know if you are aware about a new project, which is called BUILDING A MISSIOPEDIA?
Is it possible to do for mission reference works what Wiki¬pedia did for human knowledge? Missiopedia is a brand new project, launched in 2007 by Justin Long, a former associate editor of the World Christian Encyclopaedia, manager of www.strategicnetwork.org and editor of Momentum, an Internet-based magazine focused on missions to unreached peoples. Missiopedia is hosted by Momentum Magazine and The Network for Strategic Missions. Justin Long writes in his introduction, “Anyone -- that's you! -- can contribute anything in the Missiopedia. You are welcome to boldly edit articles yourself, contributing knowledge as you see fit in a collaborative way -- so, go ahead. The big project I am working on in the Missiopedia right now is to flesh out the Mission Agency directory as well as the Denominations Directory. These are two valuable areas that you probably wouldn't find anywhere else. I would like to see a historical section for each mission agency and each denomination (particularly the denominations within each country... for example Baptists in Andorra. In the “"Who's Who"” section, under Biographies of leaders after 1000 AD, I've added links for the traditional “"missionary heroes"” to start with - Carey, Judson, etc. I'm sure there are some decent, short, public biographies out there somewhere. Anyone want to add some, or point me to them? And what about less-known missionaries for the period 1000-2000 AD? Any lists or suggestions?” To get Missiopedia click on http://www.momentum-mag.org/wiki/index.php. It would be great, if you could transfer some of the biographies to Missiopedia.
-
- Sounds like an interesting project, but no thanks. Wikipedia is already a neutral format. Why should someone invest time to contribute to a lesser-known encyclopedia that requires the same neutrality? It might be interesting to contibute to one that was presenting a Biblical perspective for a change, but if the requirement is still neutrality on "Missiopedia", then why duplicate the effort for less exposure? Plus, the level of cultural and historical context that Wikipedia provides sets the history of Christian missions in a place so that it can be evaluated by the broader culture by Christians and non-Christians alike. Feel free to copy what I have submitted already to Wikipedia, but I would rather focus efforts here, for the present.Brian0324 13:57, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

- Thanks for your comment. User Timotius - Missiopedia
- Hi Brian, just FYI... The Missiopedia uses a "slightly biased point of view" which essentially says we accept the Biblical Christian position as truth but within that context use a NPOV (when reporting on various agencies, methodologies, etc). Cordially, Justin Long —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 60.52.63.129 (talk) 08:19, 1 May 2007 (UTC).

- Thanks for writing. Your project is very interesting to me. However, it will be difficult to establish the neutrality that you require. To call Finney a "successful evangelist" may be correct terminology, but theologically there could be dispute. Would be interested to see how the "slightly biased point of view" deals with "Jesuits" and "Franciscans" and "Seventh Day Adventists". Things might get testy. [edit] License tagging for Image:New Park Street 1889.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:New Park Street 1889.jpg. Wikipedia gets thousands of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.
For more information on using images, see the following pages:

[edit] Template image
Hello, Brian. Nice to see you keep improving the Chinese Missionary template. But the image appears a bit odd to my Chinese eyes. Gospel is known as 福音 ("blessing message") in Chinese, so I was a but surprised to see the character 福 appearing alone. Is it the missionaries' convention to use this single character as their logo, I wonder? Cheers.--K.C. Tang 08:51, 30 August 2007 (UTC)

- Thanks for your observation. The character is taken out of the context of this Gospel tract. Maybe I should find a better representation for the template if it doesn't make sense.Brian0324 13:31, 30 August 2007 (UTC)
- Brian, I kinda liked happiness, but feel free to use the image or instead of if you'd like. profg 19:36, 8 September 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Thanks
The Epic Barnstar | ||
Thanks for all your work on the history of Chrisian missions. I see a subset of it show in my watchlist, and I've never seen an edit I didn't think was good. And I note you appear to have over 6,000 edits, while you seem not to have had major contoversy. Keep up the good work. GRBerry 16:56, 30 August 2007 (UTC) |

[edit] Operation Auca
Thanks! I have enjoyed working on this. I'm just annoyed I can't find date of births for Ed McCully or Pete Fleming. I know it's minor, but it bugs me. Let me know if you have any ideas where I could check.
And thank YOU for helping with those pictures!

[edit] Request
Can you review the edits today to William Carey by Profg? They at least need copyediting, and gave me a feel of original research despite the references added. GRBerry 19:57, 7 September 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the review. Your edits were excellent, and much appreciated. --profg 15:59, 10 September 2007 (UTC)
[edit] License tagging for Image:China Gospel.gif
Thanks for uploading Image:China Gospel.gif.
This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 19:07, 14 September 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Fair use disputed for Image:Chinas Millions 1885.jpg
Thanks for uploading Image:Chinas Millions 1885.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot 04:46, 16 September 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Your recent report to WP:AIV
Thank you for making a report about Traffic Demon (talk · contribs · block log) at Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism. Reporting and removing vandalism is vital to the functioning of Wikipedia and all users are encouraged to revert, warn, and report vandalism. However, administrators generally only block users if they have received a recent final warning (one that mentions that the user may be blocked) and they have recently vandalized after that warning was given. The reported user has not yet been blocked because it appears this has not occurred yet. If this user continues to vandalize after their final warning, please report them to the AIV noticeboard again. In this case the user has not received a warning since the 30th of July. Any other problems please don't hesitate to get in touch. Regards Khukri 16:35, 17 September 2007 (UTC)
[edit] "Religious persecution" and the Salem witch-hunt
Looking at your adding of articles relating to the Salem episode to the "Religious persecution" category, I think that the category is not really fitting. The people were not persecuted for their actual religious beliefs, but for things they were falsely accused of doing. Including the articles in the category implies that these were really witches, who were persecuted for diabolism. I'm going to revert, but suggest that the matter be discussed at the main article, if you wish to pursue it. -- Lonewolf BC 18:10, 20 September 2007 (UTC)
-
- Whether by perception or in fact of their beliefs, they were persecuted by the religious establishment. But now that you have reverted, it remains uncategorized as such.Brian0324 19:33, 20 September 2007 (UTC)

The newsletter is back! Many things have gone on during the past few months, but many things have not. While the assessment drive helped revitalize the assessment department of the project, many other departments have received no attention. Most notably: peer review and our "workgroups". A day long IRC meeting has been planned for October 13th, with the major focus being which areas of the project are "dead", what should our goals be as a project, and how to "revive" the dead areas of our project. Contribute to the discussion on the the new channel (see below) We decided to deliver this newsletter to all project members this month but only those with their names down here will get it delivered in the future. This is your newsletter and you can be involved in the creation of the next issue. Any and all contributions are welcome. Simply let yourself be known to any of the undersigned or post news on the next issue's talk page
Lastly, a new WikiProject Biography channel has been set up on the freenode network: Our thanks to Phoenix 15 for setting it up.

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! - Please see Talk:Henry Nott/Temp. The automated deletion of stubs followed by lengthy worded messages on this discussion page is kind of silly. Not sure anyone was doing any thinking here, except a computer bot...Brian0324 17:01, 16 October 2007 (UTC)
[edit] {{Protestant missions to Pacific Islands}}
Thanks for changing the image in this template; it was confusing to have someone else's picture in the upper left side for the biographies; the ship is less confusing. Rigadoun (talk) 16:22, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

- Gracias. The subject is too broad for one portrait to sum up the whole endeavor. I'd like to eventually write an article about The Duff missionaries, as it appears that they were among the first.Brian0324 18:06, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Orphaned non-free media (Image:AmyWilsonCarmichael.jpg)
Thanks for uploading Image:AmyWilsonCarmichael.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 15:40, 20 October 2007 (UTC)
