[edit] Merge Filipinos in Britain into British Filipino
The following comment is from the Filipinos in Britain talk page. I'm pasting it here to start the discussion. --SueHay 00:04, 6 June 2007 (UTC)
- Merge I suggest that the article Filipinos in Britain should be merged/deleted. It's virtually the same as British Filipino article.62.25.109.195 13:00, 5 June 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Population figure
The article asserts that the Filipino population in the UK is 150,000. No source supporting that number is cited. I was unable to confirm that number (or any number) at http://www.statistics.gov.uk/. I checked http://www.joshuaproject.net/peoples.php, and the number given there is 77,000. The 77,000 number seems reasonable, given that the British 2001 census put the number of "Other Asian" (other than Chinese, Indian, Pakistani, or Bangladeshi) at 247,403 (this number is from census data which I downloaded, but this can be seen approximately on the chart at http://www.statistics.gov.uk/cci/nugget.asp?id=1312). I would have just changed the unsupported number of 150,000 to the 77,000 number which can be supported by citing the Joshua Project, but I wonder where the 150,000 number came from. Was it just a guess, or is it supported by some uncited source which I haven't located? -- Boracay Bill 05:05, 3 July 2007 (UTC)
The 150k figure was not a guess, it comes from the Phils embassy website in London Andy UK 13:11, 3 July 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks. I've added a citation of that source supporting the 150,000 figure to the article. -- Boracay Bill 00:37, 4 July 2007 (UTC), copyedit Boracay Bill 01:28, 4 July 2007 (UTC)

- For future refrence the term Other Asian in the UK census means other South Asians (i.e. Sri Lankans, Maldivians etc), ethnic groups such as Filipinos, Vietnamese and Thai were included in the Chinese and other category (see Census 2001 Ethnic Codes) Stevvvv4444 11:38, 20 January 2008 (UTC)
[edit] Filipino baby boom in the United Kingdom
This 24 Sept Manila Times article s highlights this, speaking of a five/day birth rate for Filipino babies in the UK.
The article also says "And since out of the total Filipino community in the UK of around 200,000 nearly 80,000 (by the Ambassador’s estimate) are nurses". This conflicts with this wikipedia article's figure of 150,000 for British Filipino (United Kingdom). That figure is based on info from a Philippine Embassy UK website page which has been a moving target in the past. This page is currently located here, and currently says "There is a significant Filipino population in the United Kingdom. Over the past twenty years, the number of Filipinos living and working in the UK has increased by more than 833% from roughly 18,000 in 1986 to more than 150,000 in 2006. Of thin number, about 70% live in Greater London area." (yes, it says "Of thin number")
I had thought to update this wikipedia article with info from the Manila Times piece, but decided not to. I mention this here, providing sources, in case anyone else is motivated to do an update. -- Boracay Bill 00:22, 24 September 2007 (UTC)
