Star Trek: Bridge Commander is a space combat simulation game for the PC, published by Activision and Totally Games based in the Star Trek universe.
The plot revolves around a newly promoted captain who is assigned to investigate an explosion of a star in the Maelstrom. Throughout the mystery, the player will often encounter characters from the Star Trek universe, including Captain Picard and Commander Data. In the game, a rogue Cardassian faction is responsible for the destruction of the star and is using a new weapon from an unknown race to threaten the Alpha Quadrant. The captain and his crew take command of the USS Sovereign (NCC-73811) to combat this new threat to the Federation.
The game allows two different styles of gameplay: storyline mode and quick battle mode. Quick battle mode allows for customized scenarios within the a "simulated" environment, allowing the player to pick their alllies/enemies, system, etc. With the advent of modding for Star Trek: Bridge Commander, custom missions and even campaigns have been made possible through this engine.

[edit] Storyline
The game begins with a standard mission, the Galaxy-class starship USS Dauntless (NCC-71879) is in orbit of a planet in the Vesuvi system. Captain Wright, the commander of the Dauntless is on-board a shuttle en route to an orbital research station when the Vesuvi star suddenly explodes. The resulting shockwave is devastating, destroying several planets and causing massive damage to nearby planets, orbital stations and in turn destroys Captain Wright's shuttlecraft. The USS Dauntless escapes under impulse power, but sustains heavy damage and is towed back to space dock by an Akira Class for repairs. Once repairs are completed, the player is promoted to Captain (having been first officer under Captain Wright) and is charged with transporting Captain Picard to Biranu station, while attending to the rebuilding process in the Maelstrom. As the game progresses, the player is then transferred to the USS Sovereign, the pathfinder of the Sovereign class.
The vessel will eventually become a key factor in solving the mystery in the Maelstrom and reveal a Cardassian plan for an invasion of the Federation.
[edit] Gameplay and mechanics
Most game functions are carried out by selecting an individual bridge officer, and selecting from a set of commands or options in order to control that individual's set of responsibilities. In this way, the game simulates being in command of a starship. For example, a player could issue the command to intercept a fleeing starship through the Helm menu, or order Felix, the tactical officer to destroy an enemy ship. An AI would then pilot the ship for the player.
Players also have the option to switch to an external ship view, and carry out many piloting and weapons functions themselves. In this view, they are able to view various tactical indicators.

Since its release, the game has been heavily expanded upon by modders and gamers of Star Trek: Bridge Commander. Modifications vary in size and quality as the amount of information available to the modding community is extensive. Several thousand mods exist that encompass re-textures, new sound packs, playable maps, and total conversions. Several large mod packs, including Kobayashimaru 1.0, Enemies of Life, and BC Supermod 3.0 to name a few combine many of the highest quality mods available for Bridge Commander, to not only allow several normally incompatible mods to work within the same game install, but to also make the game more canon to what is displayed in the Star Trek series. Most mods are released for the Deep Space 9 era.
