Image talk:British Isles Euler diagram.svg

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Image is wrong.

England and Wales are not a subset of Scotland.

"Ireland" should be "Republic of Ireland"

The Republic of Ireland is not, in fact, called the Republic of Ireland. Its official name is Ireland. As for England and Scotland being a subset of Scotland, of course they're not. That's not the intent of the diagram, but it is being interpreted that way, and will likely be changed in a future version. Lexicon (talk) 19:09, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Redid the diagram to include CI

I redid the diagram because every other source includes the Channel Islands in the British Isles. For example:

  • The Oxford English Dictionary explicitly includes them.
  • Channel Island Govt. websites include them:
    • Jersey govt. website
    • the Guernsey one is less unequivical (except for Alderney) but a look at through Google shows that they clearly see themselves as being "within" the British Isles, as opposed to "outside" of the British Isles.
  • Google (web, scholar or books) prodive plenty of evidience that they are normally included
  • Encarta inclueds them
  • Even the Comlete Idiots Guide to Geography includes them!

The only place I can see where they are explicitly excluded in WP. For sure, there is the ambiguous definition of Great Britain, Ireland "and adjacent smaller islands" but this does not exclude the as they are "adjacent" (adjacent: next to or adjoining). Whether geographically closer to France or not, they are considered geographically a part of the British Isles virtually universally except on Wikipedia. --sony-youthtalk 12:12, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Typo in diagram

Guernsey is spelt incorrectly in the diagram as it stands. Could someone with the ability to edit SVG files please correct this? Loganberry (Talk) 00:56, 25 April 2007 (UTC)

Fixed. --sony-youthpléigh 19:16, 25 April 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Image not displaying inline in Firefox/Mozilla

In Firefox 2.0.0.4 under Windows 2000 and XP, and Mozilla 1.7.12 in Linux, the image does not display inline (either on a page or on its image page). I see a white image on a page, and the transparency grid on the image page. On the image page, click the image so it opens directly in the window, and the image then displays. No idea what is going wrong here. Ghiraddje 22:27, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

Argh! Same on Safari. This wasn't the case. I had this problem happened before when I uploaded a newer version. --sony-youthpléigh 22:32, 26 June 2007 (UTC)

[edit] WONDERFUL

Great work everybody. (Now if someone can just do this with the dates Kings of England became Kings of Britain became Kings of the UK, all the history buffs will be happy too!) No, seriously, this is everything the 'pedia should be and more. jengod (talk) 03:43, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

Never mind! Someone did! Image:Nations_of_the_UK.png :) jengod (talk) 03:50, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
