An anachronous map of the British Empire showing its greatest territorial extent and territories lost prior to that time. Red: territories lost by 1900. Pink: territories held by 1945. Light pink: territories occupied by the British during World War II. Lavender: territories lost by 1705 (for England only). Salmon: territories of the defeated axis occupied by Britain 1943-1955. Note that in Italy, the occupation did not involve all of the coloured area at once, but that temporary military government was established in those areas until the Italian King's government could take over. Also note that the responsibility and chain of command of the occupation forces in the zone in Japan differed somewhat from the forces for the zones in Germany and Austria. The dotted line running just east of the solid white-line borders of Egypt and Sudan with Libya represents the new border as of 1920.
