Category talk:British literature

I've just created this as a first-tier subcategory of the UK section, and I'm going to pull whatever relevant material I can find into it. Once I've done that, it could so with a more consistent structure. One major issue in this is that there is a mixture of English and British sub-categories. Does anyone have any thoughts? - Having dug around in the literature section, there are lots of big categories organised on a genre/type of writer etc basis for all literature in English, so these will have to stand. Philip 09:39, 2 Jan 2005 (UTC)

- I removed this category from a non-existent "literature in English" category. Earlier today I made a note on the dual meaning of "English literature" on the category page of that name, and commented that in the long run I think that should be the link page to all literatures in English. At the moment the main literature category is predominantly about literature in English, but the non-English language literature hasn't been separated out (and I'm not sure it should be). But that shouldn't be done until there are reasonably complete literature sections for each English speaking country. At the moment the best way to access all the articles about literature in English is simply to use the main "Literature" section.
- When and if the "English literature" page is used for that purpose it would need to include a prominent statement that not all the literature in its sub-categories is in English. This will hopefully avoid antagonising the advocates of minority languages. Allocating the "Literature of the United Kingdom" category to "Literature in English" will seem insensitive to some because it also covers literature in Welsh, Scots Gaelic, Lallans, etc. Philip 16:06, 10 Jan 2005 (UTC)
- The Literature in English category is not non-existent and I am reinstating this category and English Literature into it. It also contains Irish, American, Australian and Canadian categories. Filiocht 16:10, Jan 10, 2005 (UTC)
- Yes, it was just a bad link before. The category contains the necessary sop to non-English language sensibilities. However, I have removed "English literature" from it as it is a sub-category of "Literature of the United Kingdom". What's more it is one that does little more than create semantic problems, as is shown on the talk page for the abortion of a main English literature article. I have done some work on the main British literature article, but it still needs immense improvement and rebalancing towards the mainstream. Philip 01:50, 11 Jan 2005 (UTC)
