Britt's Department Stores

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Britt's Department Store is a former American department store chain that existed at least into the 1970s. It was an upscale version and division of JJ Newberry's in the late 1960s. There was one that was located in St. Lawrence County, New York, 1971, and another was located in Fort Lauderdale, as an anchor store in the Coral Ridge Mall. Another one was located in Los Angeles, California across from what is now (2007) a popular outdoor shopping mall known as The Grove. Another was located in the Vestal Plaza in Vestal, New York until the late 1970s. Many Britt's stores were later converted to Newberry's. There was also a Britt's store in Springfield Vermont until 1979 when the location was changed to Ames Dept Store.

A Britt's department store operated in Kingston, New York from 1964 to the mid-1980s. There was a Britt's in Johnson City, Tennessee, in the 1970s, as well as in the Kingsway Mall in Sikeston, Missouri, until its closing in the late 1970s. Another Britt's could be found in Richmond, Kentucky in the mid to late 1970s. This store later became a Rose's store.

The chain's most upscale and elegant store was located in Paramus, New Jersey alongside the upscale Fashion Center Mall. The two level store with a circular glass elevator in its center rotunda was built and fixtured to be a Best and Co. location. Best and Company was being shut down just as the building was completed and it sat idle for a few years before Britts opened the store with the layout and fixtures planned for Best and Company.
