[edit] About
BUSC or the British Universities Snowsports Council exists to promote participation and competition in skiing and snowboarding at all levels for students in the UK.
[edit] Activities
The main role of BUSC as an organisation is to run events for student snow sports and it is the only BUCS (British Universities Sports Association) recognised organiser of snowsports competitions.
The BUSC year is packed with races, freestyle comps, demo days, parties and culminates at The Main Event. This is a two week long event with competitions, ski and snowboard lessons, freestyle exhibitions and a chance to get first timers away on snow for some fun. All of this is rounded up with night time entertainment to rival any major British city.
Ultimately BUSC's goal as an organization is to promote competitive snowsports within universities, as well as encouraging participation at a lower level to all mainstream students.
[edit] History
The first BUSC Championships were run over 80 years ago and were set up by Oxford and Cambridge . The venue, not surprisingly for transport options at the time was Cairngorm mountains. This is where the British University Ski Champions were decided in slalom and giant slalom. To begin with the contest was for gentlemen only, although this is thought to have changed after the 2nd World War. The championships continued to be held in Scotland and were mainly attended by Oxbridge and some of the more affluent universities, all the way up to the late eighties. During the early nineties with the cost of travel decreasing and skiing becoming more popular amongst all classes, the Championships moved to the Alps . It is from here that BUSC began to develop into the event spectacle we know today.
In 1990 BUSC was established as a true not-for profit organisation. Two years later they ran the Main event for the first time. The then running committee decided that rather than just a one off race, the program should be based around a week long holiday, featuring training, free skiing, racing and drinking. Over the last 14 years, BUSC has continued to grow, with help from, amongst others, Nottingham, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Bristol and Salford Universities . The programs have changed, events have been added and taken away, but the unique spirit has always stayed the same.
