Brigadier Gerard Stakes

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Brigadier Gerard Stakes is a Group 3 flat horse race in the United Kingdom for four-year-old and above thoroughbreds. It is run over a distance of 1 mile 2 furlongs and 7 yards (2,018 m) at Sandown Park Racecourse in late May or early June.

It was first run in 1953 as the Coronation Stakes, in honour of the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. It was renamed in 1973 in honour of Brigadier Gerard, a British flat racehorse who won 17 of his 18 races, including the 2,000 Guineas in 1971, and who won this race himself in 1972.
