[edit] Career
Welsh began his career with Dundee United, making his debut in the 1986-87 season. During that season, in 1986, Welsh was part of the Scotland team who reached the semi-finals of the UEFA European Under-19 Football Championship, losing 1-0 to Italy. The following year, he reached the quarter-finals of the World Youth Championship, losing on penalties to West Germany. Welsh became a regular in the United side in 1994 and after winning the Scottish Cup, experiencing relegation and subsequent promotion with the club. At the start of the 1996, Welsh left Tannadice and joined Hibernian where he again suffered relegation and immediate promotion. After three years in Edinburgh, Welsh had short spells with Stenhousemuir and Clydebank before signing for Cowdenbeath in 2000. Welsh retired two years later due to injury and coached at Central Park for four years before being being appointed manager in October 2006.[1] Managing on a part-time basis, Welsh also runs a local taxi firm.[1]
In 2008, Welsh began legal proceedings against Doctor Malcolm Morrison, who was employed as Hibernian club doctor during Welsh's time with the club, claiming "an injection given...ruined his career".[2] An out-of-court settlement for a "substantial sum" was reached on 30 April 2008.[2]
