Brian Smith (born July 16, 1959 in Ames, Iowa) is an American photographer best known for his fashion and celebrity photographs.

[edit] Biography
Brian Smith won the Pulitzer Prize for his photographs of the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games while a photographer for the Orange County Register. In 1988, he was again a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for his photographs of Haiti in Turmoil for the Miami Herald.

Brian Smith's first magazine photograph of New York Yankees' manager Billy Martin crying at Thurman Munson’s funeral was published in LIFE Magazine while Smith was a 20-year-old journalism student at the University of Missouri in Columbia, Missouri. Smith got his start in photography while a high school swimmer photographing swimming and other sports as a stringer for the Ames Daily Tribune in his hometown of Ames, Iowa.

Brian Smith won the 1985 Pulitzer Prize for Spot News Photography for his photographs of the Los Angeles Olympics. His photograph of Greg Louganis hitting his head on the diving board at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games won top awards from World Press Photo, the Pictures of the Year and was chosen as one of Photo District News' "Greatest Sports Photos 1980-2000."[1]" He has been featured on the cover of the Photo District News' Portraiture Issue, the Communication Arts Photography Annual, Pop Photo and After/Capture[2] magazine. Smith was twice named as one of American Photo magazine's "New Faces in Photography.

Smith's photograph of Pope John Paul II was featured on the cover of Newsweek in 2005.[3] Smith's work also appears on the covers of Forbes, Sports Illustrated, Time Magazine, Business Week and People. His advertising clients include Kraft, Nabisco, Knopf, TNT, and NBC.

Brian Smith is President of Editorial Photographers,[4] a photography trade organization of 2,000 magazine photographers and photojournalists from around the world.
[edit] Teaching and Public speaking
Smith has taught and lectured Photography Trade Shows including PhotoPlus Expo in New York and WPPI in Las Vegas. He has lectured students at Brooks Institute of Photography, Ohio University, Hallmark Institute and the Atlanta and Fort Lauderdale Art Institutes. Smith appeared on Fine Living Channel's "Me vs. Me."[5]
