[edit] Playing career

Lloyd began his career playing non-league football with Rhyl, where he played a handful of games before joining Stockport County for £1,000[1] in March 1967. After 32 league appearances he moved to Southend United in September 1969 for £10,000.[2]

He returned to North Wales in August 1971, beginning a long stint with Wrexham. Lloyd played 35 games in his first season at the club and was then ever-present in league games in the next five years, as the club challenged for promotion from Division Three.[3] Lloyd was the club’s first winner of the Jack Williams Player of the Season accolade in 1975–76.[4] During the same season he was capped three times by Wales in matches against Austria, England and Scotland,[5] having twice previously played for the Welsh under 23s.[6]

In September 1977 Lloyd made a surprise £6,000 move to local rivals Chester.[7] He quickly replaced fellow Welshman Grenville Millington as the regular Chester goalkeeper and helped them finish fifth in Division Three, with Lloyd being named as the club’s player of the season for his efforts.[8] He was again first-choice the following season but an injury in September 1979 led to Millington replacing Lloyd in the Chester goal.[9] With Millington now the regular in goal and youngster Phil Harrington emerging from the youth ranks,[10] Lloyd was allowed to join Port Vale in February 1981 on loan.

Ahead of the start of the following season Lloyd was back at Stockport County. He missed just one game in two seasons with the club and even managed to get on the scoresheet against Bradford City in 1982.[11] Lloyd dropped into non-league football, having spells with North Wales sides Bangor City, Colwyn Bay, Rhyl and Lex XI.[12]

[edit] Career after football

He also became a self-employed design consultant in Wrexham, a career he had initially begun after leaving school.[13] He has won awards for his architectural work.[14]
