[edit] College career

Cardinal attended Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana (1996-2000), and played under coach Gene Keady. "The Janitor" helped lead the Boilermakers to an Elite Eight appearance in 2000. He currently holds the career steals record at 259. He is one of three former Purdue players in the NBA, including Brad Miller and Carl Landry.

[edit] Professional career

Cardinal was selected in the second round by the Detroit Pistons in the 2000 NBA Draft, with little impact (23 games in two seasons). On September 11, 2002, he was traded to the Washington Wizards with Jerry Stackhouse and Ratko Varda, for Richard Hamilton, Hubert Davis and Bobby Simmons, but was waived shortly after. After that, he spent the rest of the season playing in Spain.

In 2003-04, after a late preseason signing with the Golden State Warriors, Cardinal had a breakthrough season, averaging 10 points and 4 rebounds per game in 76 games, while receiving votes in the Most Improved Player competition.[1]

In 2004, Cardinal signed as a free agent with the Memphis Grizzlies, where he repeated numbers from the previous season in his first year. His impact would gradually diminish through 2005-08.
