The Kreegan are a race of aliens who exist in the Might and Magic universe. Similar to Demons in appearance, they colonize space, travelling from planet to planet in meteor-like vessels to wage war on the inhabitants and eventually claim the worlds for themselves. They are sworn adversaries of the Ancients, a mysterious race who are crucial to the backstory of the series. While appearing mainly in the sixth and seventh installment of the series, they are briefly mentioned, but never encountered, in the eighth and ninth parts. Also, a few spin-offs of the series set in the same universe such as Heroes of Might and Magic III, Heroes of Might and Magic IV, Heroes Chronicles: The Fiery Moon and Heroes Chronicles: Clash of the Dragons have plots that involve the Kreegan race.

[edit] Background

More than a thousand years ago, Colony, the world in which Heroes of Might and Magic II-III and Might and Magic VI-VIII take place was overseen by a mysterious people known as the Ancients. This epoch was known as the Time of Wonders, and the Web of Worlds which connected all of the planets in the galaxy thrived. However, war between the Ancients and the Kreegan resulted in all planets within the Spinward Rim (the outer regions of the Web of Worlds) to lose contact with the Ancients, and planets including Colony and Ardon fell into a state of barbarism (referred to as The Silence). As time passed, and the worlds began to rebuild, the people forgot about their origins and their contact with the Ancients.

1161 years after The Silence, the Kreegans invaded Colony. They landed in great numbers upon the continents of Enroth and Antagarich using vessels resembling meteors glowing in the night sky. Their arrival came to be known as the Night of Shooting Stars. Soon after their initial landing, they captured King Roland Ironfist of Enroth and participated in a major invasion of Erathia, a nation upon Antagarich. However, their numbers were severely crippled upon the murder of their Queen (in Might and Magic VI) and the assassination of their leader in Antagarich, Zenofex (referred to in Heroes of Might and Magic III as Xenofex).

The Kreegans were almost entirely exterminated from the face of Colony during the expansion pack for Heroes of Might and Magic III, Armageddon's Blade. During this campaign, Queen Catherine Ironfist of Erathia, aided by her husband, King Roland (freed from the Kreegans during Might and Magic VII) led a large-scale assault on Eeofol, a territory in Antagarich inhabited by the Kreegans. During this time, a demon lord named Lucifer Kreegan III took command of the Kreegan forces, becoming King of Eeofol. His lieutenant, a half-human, half-Kreegan named Xeron, was sent to forge an almighty weapon named Armageddon's Blade.

Assisted by the Elven warrior Gelu, Catherine and Roland fought Lucifer's armies and, after a fateful battle, took Armageddon's Blade. With the help of the Elementals, otherworldly representatives of the Ancients, they captured the Kreegan capital of Kreelah. Gelu used Armageddon's Blade to kill King Lucifer, ending the war against the Kreegans. Assumedly, Xeron was slain in these final battles, but may have survived (it is unclear). Nonetheless, during these wars, the Kreegan race upon Colony was decimated.

After the Reckoning (an event where Armageddon's Blade and the Sword of Frost clashed, destroying Colony but allowing countless refugees to flee through mysterious portals to a neighbouring world known as Axeoth), the Kreegans returned in full measure. Most of their scattered race began associating with the undead, forming alliances with the newly established necromantic kingdom of Nekross, ruled by Gauldoth Half-Dead. By the end of Heroes of Might and Magic IV, the Kreegans continued to co-exist with the undead. Their plans for the future of Axeoth, and indeed the details of their ongoing war against the Ancients, were left untold until the release of a fan-made campaign for Heroes V, some years after the franchise was purchased by Ubisoft.

In Heroes V: Legends of the Ancients, a Kreegan conqueror named Malustar led a Kreegan uprising in Nekross. Quickly amassing their forces, the rebels decimated much of the kingdom, even taking over the capital city of Nekross and attacking Gauldoth himself in Chiaroscuro. Malustar, armed with the fragments of Armageddon's Blade, cornered and attacked who he believed to be Gauldoth. However, it turned out that he had slain Hadrin, Gauldoth's top lieutenant. The real Gauldoth had long since retreated with his armies in tow. Malustar, enraged, decided to wage war on the nearby realm of Great Arcan. However, his armies were quickly defeated and he was forced to flee backwards to Nekross once more.

[edit] Characteristics

By other races of Colony and Axeoth, a Kreegan individual would be referred to as "Demon" or "Devil", and indeed share many traits with such mythical races. There are numerous types of Kreegan. The average "Demon" warrior has small, peering eyes, bodies covered with scales and horns, and claws on both their hands and feet. "Devils" are tall, looming Kreegans who share similar characteristics, and wield large scythes in combat. A Kreegan's body shape is more or less humanoid, with unusually large hands, and arms long enough for them to touch the ground while standing upright; in MM7 (although not in MM6) Kreegan move in a fashion similar to that of gorillas. In Heroes of Might and Magic III, Kreegan armies consist of Demons, Devils, and other demonic races such as Imps, Familiars, Gogs, Magogs, Hellhounds, Cerberi, Pit Fiends, Pit Lords and Efreeti. Their elite vanguard, the Sons of Erebus, was destroyed in Heroes of Might and Magic III: Armageddon's Blade. In Heroes of Might and Magic IV, Familiars, Gogs, Magogs, Hellhounds, Pit Fiends and Pit Lords do not appear. Efreeti do feature, but have abandoned their alliance with the Kreegan. Instead, Ice Demons join the Kreegan ranks. Kreegans appear in various different colors, and occasionally come with wings. Some also spread disease or have destructive powers such as fire magic.
