Brevikbanen is a 10 kilometer long branch railway line running from Vestfoldbanen at Eidanger to Brevik in Telemark, Norway. It is used solely for freight, and serves a Norcem cement plant and the Grendland Terminal port.

[edit] History

The line was opened in 1895 with a track gauge of 1067 mm, converted to 1435 mm standard gauge in 1921. Passenger services were withdrawn in 1968 and since then the only traffic has been limestone trains, which have operated to Norcem's plant at Ørvik since the 1970s. In 1993 the Grendland Terminal was built and connected to the line.

Many of Norges Statsbaner's oldest locomotive classes have operated on the line, performing their final duties before retirement. These include classes El 8, El 11, and El 13, usually operated in pairs, with one at each end of the train. Current traction is in the hands of class El 14 locomotives and type Skd 226 shunters.
