Brendon James Goddard, or 'BJ', (born May 20, 1985) is an Australian rules football player. Goddard plays as a midfielder for St Kilda in the Australian Football League.
Goddard was raised in Traralgon, Victoria, and later attended Caulfield Grammar School as a boarder. Goddard was an accomplished sportsman, co-captaining the school's First XVIII football team and co-captaining the First XI cricket team as a powerful batsman and pace bowler. He was selected by the St Kilda Football Club with the first pick in the 2002 AFL Draft after Carlton lost its draft picks due to salary cap violations. The Blues had previously declared an intention to draft Goddard with the first pick in the draft.
Goddard debuted for St Kilda in the 2003 season while completing his VCE as a Year 12 student at Caulfield Grammar. For a No.1 draft pick, Goddard has come under lots of criticism over the past few years. Around 2006, Goddard stopped many of his critics in their tracks, after he averaged over 20 disposals a game. During 2006, Goddard joined fellow St.Kilda player Aaron Fiora as one of the biggest kicks in the AFL, after kicking a 70 metre goal against Fremantle. Many fans shout out 'have a shot!' when Goddard marks the ball in the defensive half.
During the Saints Round 7, 2007 win against the Sydney Swans, Goddard fell hard on his left knee which resulted in a ruptured ACL (the main ligament that supports the knee) which was enough to end his season. He is expected to return from anywhere between the start of the 2008 season and the mid year break.
Goddard has signed on to stay with St.Kilda until 2008, despite many attempts by other clubs such as Carlton, who have been rumoured to try to sign the star.
