In the fictional Robotech universe, Commander Breetai is second in command of all Zentradi forces, after Supreme Commander Dolza himself. Breetai (known as Vrlitwhai Kridanik in The Super Dimension Fortress Macross, the series which was adapted into the first saga of Robotech) was one of the original creations of the Robotech Masters, and has lived for over 500,000 years. Breetai has shown himself time and time again as a true military genius, securing himself his well-established position. Breetai's full name was given as Breetai Tul during the Jack McKinney novelizations and Eternity Comic's adaptations.
[edit] First Robotech War
Dolza is ordered by the Robotech Masters to find the SDF-1, because they are running out of Protoculture, a form of energy. Dolza knows that finding the ship is like finding a needle in the galactic haystack. Breetai is chosen for this difficult mission because of his military skill and intellect. Eventually, Breetai and his fleet find the SDF-1 on Earth, which marks the beginning of the First Robotech War.
On Earth, Breetai finds the ship completely remodeled and is confounded by the actions of the Micronians. Their raid consisting of two ARMD class carrier bewilders him, as he believes that the Micronians are not even able to use their own weapons. Breetai then orders a scout team down and the destruction of the city surrounding the fortress. These actions cause SDF-1's captain, Captain Henry J. Gloval, to order a space-fold, which takes his ship and Macross island around Pluto. Breetai follows, and as the SDF-1 tries to work its way back to Earth, he launches wave after wave to harass the ship, but not destroy it, out of fear of destroying the Protoculture Generator.
Eventually, Breetai and his men become contaminated with Micronian culture, and therefore are marked for destruction by Dolza as Dolza fears the contamination's spread. In the final battle for Earth against Dolza's fleet of four million warships, Breetai chooses to join the SDF-1 and Azonia instead of face destruction. His armada of about one million ships manages to help wipe out Dolza's fleet.
At the end of the Macross Saga, Breetai and a select team of Micronians including Rick Hunter, Lisa Hayes, Claudia Grant, and the Sterlings capture a Zentradi war factory, which they eventually use to build the SDF-3 Pioneer to search for the Robotech Masters' homeworld. A micronized Breetai joins the SDF-3 on their quest.
[edit] Robotech Expeditionary Force
In order to avoid infringing on the original designs for Macross characters designed by Haruhiko Mikimoto, Breetai, like other Macross characters was redesigned for later Robotech productions such as Robotech II The Sentinels. Not only was he micronized, but he also acquired a helmet to replace his metallic eyepatch.
During the Sentinels novels, Breetai is placed in charge of mining operations on the world of Fantoma, where he recalled the suppressed memories of his past life before the Zentradi race was made into soldiers for the Robotech Masters. Eventually he commands the remaining Zentradi in a battle against the Invid on the world of Optera, where he and the Invid Regent die in combat together. However, before dying, he develops a romantic relationship with a female Zentradi, Kazianna Hesh, with whom he conceives the first non-micronized Zentradi child shortly before his death.
In the Robotech: Prelude to the Shadow Chronicles comics Breetai dies in a slightly different fashion. He still dies while fighting the Regent but, both are killed aboard the Regent's Flag Ship when it is fired upon by Edwards.
