The Breeders' Cup Marathon is a 1 and 1/2 mile Weight for Age stakes race for thoroughbred racehorses three years old and up. As its name implies, it will be a part of the Breeders' Cup, the de facto year-end championship for North American thoroughbred racing, and will be run on a dirt course (either natural dirt or a synthetic surface). The race will be run for the first time in 2008 during Saturday of the Breeders' Cup at that year's host track, Santa Anita Park, which has synthetic Cushion Track[1]. However, there is a good change that it could be held on a dirt course.[2] The dirt was dropped of the name in April, 2008.
Because of technical requirements, it is not eligible for classification as a graded stakes race in its first two runnings[3].
The initial purse will be $500,000 US.
