Breaksea Island (Western Australia)

Breaksea Island is an island in King George Sound in the Great Southern of Western Australia and is 12 kilometres (7 mi) South East of Albany. [1] The island is a nature reserve (declared in 1969[2]) and managed by Department of Environment and Conservation (Western Australia), it’s reserve number is 27614. The island is also registered as a national estate. The island is 1.03 square kilometres (255 acres). in area. [3] The island is 3 kilometres (2 mi) in length and 600 metres (1,969 ft) at its widest part. The closest island in Michaelmas Island which is located 1.5 kilometres (1 mi) North of Breaksea Island.
[edit] Lighthouse
A lighthouse was built on the island in 1858 by English convicts using pre-made cast iron sheeting. [4] This lighthouse was replaced in 1902 by a cylindical granite tower which remains in good condition to this day.
