Talk:Braidfauld
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It would be very useful to get the advice or help of some Wikipedian more skilled in editing and layout than I am. In content, the article is accurate as far as publicly available sources allow. Meanwhile, I am attempting to build up a complete picture of an area that in many ways is typical of working class areas in Britain. Help from those who have trodden that path would be gratefully accepted. I am trying to piece together the history of its development and will try to get reasonably comprehensive statistics on its current make-up, socially, politically and economically. The usual histories and reference books have been consulted but generally Braidfauld is a sort of no-man's land for details. I shall try to get to the archives. Among the historical issues still to be addressed are
- What sort of farmland was the area? It seems sparsely populated and the names (both Gaelic and Scots) suggest poor land
- What exactly is the underlying geology?
- Why did the gentlemen/ merchants come here? They seemed to have exploited the stone and coal from the outset. Their homes look more successful middle class than gentlemanly (though the Hopkirks of Dalbeth claimed a coat of arms)
- What was the real story behind the Westthorn riots (it is not on a direct route from Dalmarnock to Carmyle. Were the weavers being deprived of a country walk?)
- What was the origin of the two-storey 19th century homes? Related to the farms? Related to the estates? Related to the road?
- is the Farm Shop really the remains of a farm?
- Who were the red sandstone tenements built for and when (Whitby Street, Helenvale Street, Tollcross Road, Maukinfauld road)?
- Who were the Maukinfauld cottages built for, and when?
- Where do the names Newbank and Lilybank come from? They are English (not Scots or Gaelic) so this suggests a recent origin. Newbank House is marked on a map of 1865 but there is no mention of Lilybank (but I think there used to be a Lilybank Cottage).
- Why is the Newbank council estate of a higher quality than the Lilybank estate?
- Who designed the Lilybank tenements and when and why were they built?
- Whatever happened to Parkhead Juniors?
I'll get the answers eventually, but any help would be gratefully received.
