General elections were held in Brazil on 6 October 2002. A second round of voting was necessary for the Presidential election, and this was held on 27 October.

Although Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva won the most votes in the first round, he did not manage to cross the 50% barrier. This necessitated a second round, which Lula won comfortably, receiving 61.3% of the vote, compared to just 38.7% for José Serra

Lula's Worker's Party won the most seats in the Parliamentary elections, though failed to gain an outright majority as they won only 91 of the 513 seats.
