Brazilian Top Team Canada (BTT Canada) is an association of mixed martial arts schools begun in 2003 by Philip Gelinas and Fabio Holanda, a third-degree black belt in Brazilian jiu jitsu. The organization is an offshoot of Brazilian Top Team, where Holanda trained before coming to Canada.
BTT Canada academies emphasize Brazilian jiu jitsu (BJJ), and are attended by both recreational athletes and competitive and professional martial artists. In addition to BJJ, arts such as boxing, muay thai and wrestling are taught at some schools in the network.
The association is headquartered in the Gelinas Academy of Mixed Martial Arts (GAMMA) in Montreal, where Holanda teaches and trains.[1][2] Other schools in the network include Lin Martial arts in Toronto,[3] BJJ Québec[5] in Quebec City, and Ronin Mixed Martial Arts[4] in Ottawa.
The association comprises some of the most established Brazilian jiu jitsu schools in Canada, where BJJ was all but unheard of until recent years. There are six black belts and many brown belts at BTT Canada schools, a high number for Canadian gyms. Jiu jitsu tournaments are held at the Montreal school several times a year and all schools in the network regularly host seminars by specialists in BJJ and other styles.
