[edit] Origin and inaugural season

In early 2007, the Brazilian branch of the TV series-oriented cable channel, Sony Entertainment Television, decided to set in motion the project to create a Brazilian variation of the TV show created by Tyra Banks in the United States. The idea was to follow the model developed in the U.S. in terms of the contest itself and the prize to be offered to the winner[2], although it was decided that the general approach to the candidates would involve "less cruelty" in comparison to the example set by Tyra Banks in the United States[3].

One of the production decisions leading up to the show that caught the most media attention was the selection of the Brazilian model who would play the role belonging to Tyra Banks in the original. The channel's first choice was Brazil's current number one model, Gisele Bündchen[2], who turned down the offer[4]; model Fernanda Motta was then eventually chosen for the position. In order to accept the job, Motta, who lives in New York City, reportedly cancelled most of her agenda so that she could stay in the country for 2 months straight.[5]

Enrollment for the show took place during the month of July 2007, from the 1st of July to the 31st[1], and shooting for the inaugural season began on August 19, and it premiered on October 3. The season is scheduled to wrap, with the selection of the winner, on December 20.[3] The winner will sign a four-year contract[5] with the Brazilian branch of the modeling agency Ford Models that is reportedly worth R$ 200,000 (or about 100 thousand US dollars) and will be the January 2008 cover for the Brazilian issue of Elle Magazine[3]. The second cycle of the show was already confirmed, and it will start airing in 2008. Taping will start in July.
