Brave Story (ブレイブ・ストーリー bureibu stōrī?) is a Japanese novel by Miyuki Miyabe. A manga adaptation (which would actually be a retelling) by Yoichiro Ono began serializing in Weekly Comic Bunch in 2004 and consists of 17 volumes as of August 2007. An animated film adaptation produced by Gonzo Studio and directed by Koichi Chigira, with scores by Juno Reactor[1], was released in Japanese cinemas by Warner Bros. on July 8, 2006 and on DVD, Blu-ray, HD DVD and UMD on November 23, 2006. Optimum Releasing planned to release the film in the UK[2], but it has been delayed indefinitely, but it will be shown in German theaters [3].
The novel is available in the English language by VIZ Media, translated by Alexander O. Smith, [4], while the manga is being released by Tokyopop in anglophone countries. The first three volumes have so far been released. The novel received the Batchelder Award for the outstanding children's book translated from a foreign language published in the United States.[5]
The story revolves around a 10 year old boy named Wataru, who must enter a fantasy world "Vision", to find a way to save his mother and himself from an unfair destiny.
