[edit] History

Originally known as Linchpin, the crossroads of highways 76 and 13 was officially called Lakeview until its name was changed by the city in 1992 in an attempt to cash in on the explosive growth of the tourism industry in nearby Branson, Missouri. The bid initially paid off as the population of Branson West went from 37 to 408 between 1990 and 2000; growth has since tapered mostly due to the town's isolation and lack of nearby amenities. Currently Branson West is building a municipal airport with a 5,000 ft runway that is expected to open sometime in 2008.[citation needed] The hope that this airport will bolster the town's stagnant economy and entice tourists to stop on their way to Branson and Silver Dollar City.[citation needed]
