Brødrene Hartmann A/S (OMXHART B) is a Danish public corporation which specializes in moulded-fibre packaging with two core areas of business: egg packaging and industrial packaging. Although headquartered in Denmark, Hartmann owns and operates divisions in North America and throughout Europe.

In addition to manufacturing moulded-fibre packaging products, Hartmann also develops and sells equipment and parts for the manufacturing of fibre packaging through its 'Hartmann Technology' division. This equipment is built for Hartmann's own plants and is also licensed out for use by other companies.

[edit] History

Brødrene Hartmann A/S was founded in 1917 by Louis, Carl, and Gunnar Hartmann. The three brothers inherited their father's paper bag plant, located in Lyngby, Denmark. By 1936, Brødrene Hartmann was producing moulded-fibre packaging products in Denmark[3].

Since that time, Hartmann has grown into a multinational corporation, with production facilities in seven countries and offices in more than ten countries[4].

[edit] Divisions

[edit] North America

Brødrene Hartmann A/S entered the North American egg carton market in 2002 with the acquisition of Cascades' egg carton interests. This has allowed Hartmann North America to become the second-largest supplier of egg cartons in the continent[5]. Hartmann set up a new plant in Brantford, Ontario, Canada and began production in 2004.

Hartmann's Brantford facility manufactures several types of moulded-fibre egg cartons. The following products are manufactured at the Brantford location:

  • HartTop 2x6
  • HartTop 3x6
  • HartVue 2x6
  • HartVue 2x6 Jumbo
  • Twin-Six

[edit] South America

In 1997, Brødrene Hartmann A/S acquired an 85% stake in MAPOL of Brazil. MAPOL was, at the time, the largest packaging company in South America[6]. This was followed, in 1998, by the acquisition of HARTMANN-PPM Argentina S.R.L. in Argentina[7]. On April 30th, 2007, it was announced that Brødrene Hartmann completed the sale of its South American activities[8]. The sale was decided following large losses experienced by that division of the company. The South American division was purchased by Lactosan Sanovo Holding.

The sale of the South American unit of Brødrene Hartmann is somewhat controversial, as the buyer is not only a shareholder of Brødrene Hartmann A/S, but was also a candidate for the Board of Directors. Major shareholders of Brødrene Hartmann A/S are currently seeking additional information about the sale of the South American interests[9].

[edit] Sustainable Development

Brødrene Hartmann A/S has taken an active role in developing and implementing sustainable development principles in its business model. In August 1991, Hartmann led a group of major Danish corporations to form ELM Denmark[10]. ELM Denmark's goals included encouraging corporate responsibility toward the environment and the continued "development of the integrated system of environmental management"[11].
