Boyd Richard Hoyland was a fictional character in the Australian soap opera Neighbours, played by Kyal Marsh. He first appeared in 2002 and left the show on August 3, 2007.

[edit] History

Boyd moved in to Ramsay Street as a mulleted youngster in early 2002, along with his sister Summer (Marisa Siketa) and their grandmother, Rosie (Maggie Millar). The three were soon joined by Boyd and Summer's father, Max (Stephen Lovatt), and Rosie left for Fiji. At first he dated Heather Green (Megan Harrington), a girl he did practically anything for. He really liked her and even attempted to steal a street sign for her. She soon grew tired of Boyd and his immaturity and dumped him.

Boyd later moved onto neighbour, Harold Bishop's (Ian Smith) granddaughter, Sky Mangel (Stephanie McIntosh), a girl with black and blue hair, to whom he lost his virginity in early 2004. He had a dispute with a guy named Travis Dean (Adrian Foley) about space to put up posters, which resulted in Travis threatening Boyd's family. In school, he was moved from Year 9 to Year 10, but after Year 12, he flunked his exams and got a job at a gym, whose manager persuaded him to take up body building and take human growth hormones. He was mistakenly diagnosed as having Adolescent Schizophrenia but the symptoms were due to a large frontal lobe brain tumour. This was removed, but the surgery put him in a coma for a short while, but he woke up after his grandfather, Bobby (Andrew McFarlane) came to see him. He broke up with Sky after he found out she kissed Dylan Timmins (Damien Bodie) while he was in a coma.

He offered to help young mother Kayla Thomas (Virginia Ryan) raise her baby, Ashley (Amielle Lemaire), but eventually they realised that it wouldn't have worked, as Kayla was still in love with Ashley's father, Anthony. He then started a relationship with Janae Timmins (Eliza Taylor-Cotter). He has decided to pursue a career in medicine, and in his second attempt at his VCEs he came in the top one percent of students in the state to win a place at medical school. He is now married to Janae. However as she was under 18 at the time and was unable to obtain parental consent and a court order (both required under Australian law) she doctored her birth certificate to make her appear to be of age. Thus the marriage is technically invalid. Their families know about this, but the authorities don't. After both were kicked out of their homes, they moved into the "House of Trouser". Boyd then got into an argument with a customer at The Scarlet Bar who turned out to be a superior at Erinsborough Hospital. They resolved their differences when she was exposed operating under the influence of drugs. After Max hit Cameron Robinson (Adam Hunter) with his car, mistaking him for his twin brother Robert (also Adam Hunter), Cameron was rushed to hospital but didn't survive. Max was overwhelmed with guilt having inadvertently killed Cameron. After this Max was gaslighted by Elle Robinson (Pippa Black).

Believing that he was crazy, Max committed himself to Erinsborough Hospital and had a mental breakdown he left town on a bus leaving a family picture. Boyd is eager to find Max having denied knowing him when be asked by another Medical student. Lonely after he lost Max, Boyd went to Tasmania, where he met a girl and ended up committing adultery. It appears that this storyline was a homage to Fatal Attraction, as the girl, who has arrived in Erinsborough, is named "Glenn Forrest" (played by Cleopatra Coleman) (derived from Fatal Attraction character Alex Forrest, and the actress who played her, Glenn Close).

After Janae found out that Boyd slept with Glenn, she gave him the chance to sort out his feelings, confident that Boyd would choose her. However Boyd rekindled his affair with Glenn. When Janae told her family, Dylan and Stingray (Ben Nicholas) found Boyd and assaulted him. Glenn called the police despite Boyd not wanting her to. When Senior Sergeant Allan Steiger (Joe Clements) (who is dating Janae's mother) came and found that it was Boyd who had been attacked, he had no sympathy and told him that his report would be at the bottom of a very long list. The following week, Stingray died. When he heard about the death, he went to comfort Janae, much to Glenn's jealousy.

After Glenn left him, Boyd tried to get his relationship with Janae back but she refused to take him back.

He has recently started a half romantic relationship with Charlotte Stone, although it is more of an emotional security need for him, after being rejected by Janae and after fully realising that his father and Steph will not get back together. Boyd helped Sky get out of jail by tricking Charlotte into confessing about the murders. Since then Boyd and Sky started hanging out again like they used to and Boyd's old feelings for Sky then resurfaced but he quickly realised that things between the two were over for good. When he heard that Sky was leaving Erinsborough he decided to move on as well, as he felt that Erinsborough wasn't his home anymore. He decided to drive with Sky to Port Douglas, and then travel around Australia. Shortly before leaving everyone threw Boyd and Sky a goodbye party.
