Contents

[edit] Created

The template was created 21-June-2007 as a bottom navigation-box (nav-box), connecting sideways to predecessor/successor films which ranked as box office leaders in the United States. -Wikid77 16:38, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Usage

By 10-July-2007, the template had been included into over 150 Wikipedia articles. When adding to other articles, the edit summary should mention "added Template:Box Office Leaders USA" or similar wording. -Wikid77 16:38, 11 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] Multiple Countries

To add a film that was # in multiple countries, use this template: template:WorldwideBoxOfficeLeader to contain the separate country templates as demonstated here: User:Richfife/MultipleBoxOfficeDemo. That way we don't take up more real estate than we should. Thanks! - Richfife 20:09, 18 July 2007 (UTC)

You should make that a real template, and not just a template inside your username. User templates should not be put on the main namespace. --Steinninn 23:18, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
I will once it's being used. I didn't want to create an orphan template and I don't have time to start using it right now. - Richfife 23:24, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
No one is going to use it when it's in the user namespace. My opinion: this template was a bad idea from the start. Maybe not that bad idea all together, just a bad idea for Wikipedia. --Steinninn 23:30, 18 July 2007 (UTC)
You're on record in that respect. Thanks! - Richfife 00:01, 19 July 2007 (UTC)
Template has been moved to mainspace. - Richfife 02:23, 19 July 2007 (UTC)

[edit] protection?

Why is this page protected? ~ PaulC/T+ 06:35, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

Because a change here would suddenly appear on several hundred pages about popular movies. If it's any consolation, I created it and I can't change it anymore either. Sniff. - Richfife (talk) 06:43, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
No, that isn't a consolation. There are many templates that get transcluded across many articles and they are only protected if there is demonstrated vandalism... and then only after semi-protection doesn't work. This page should be unprotected. At the very least there should be some discussion about the protection and appropriate protection templates should be added to the page. ~ PaulC/T+ 06:52, 8 January 2008 (UTC)
I believe it's protected under Wikipedia:High-risk templates. Whether it qualifies or not is a separate issue. You may want to take it up with User:Nick, the protecting admin. - Richfife (talk) 17:25, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Wikilinking of date and year

I don't think the date and year should be wikilinked. In the context of a particular date, the fact that a particular film was Box Office Leader in the USA for the week ending on that date isn't really all that notable. And a red link to a date range, such as in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, is completely useless. DH85868993 (talk) 09:50, 25 January 2008 (UTC)

I concur. - Richfife (talk) 16:44, 25 January 2008 (UTC)
I see this template is an instance of {{Box Office Leaders}}. I'll copy this discussion there. DH85868993 (talk) 23:52, 25 January 2008 (UTC)

[edit] Something's wrong

{{editprotected}} Does not work correctly with date2 and year2 parameters: effectively ignores them. {{Box Office Leaders}} works fine by itself, though. Why not just this:

{{Template:Box_Office_Leaders
| before = {{{before}}}
| after = {{{after}}}
| date = {{{date}}}
| year = {{{year}}}
| year2 = {{{year2|}}}
| date2 = {{{date2|}}}
| country = USA
}}<noinclude>[[Category:WikiProject Films templates|{{PAGENAME}}]]
[[Category:Succession templates|{{PAGENAME}}]]</noinclude>

This should work... GregorB (talk) 14:06, 26 January 2008 (UTC)

An easy way to demonstrate the bug: go to User:Richfife/MultipleBoxOfficeDemo, change the last template to Box Office Leaders USA and remove the country parameter. The range is gone. GregorB (talk) 14:09, 26 January 2008 (UTC)
Until very recently, this was working properly (on National Treasure: Book of Secrets for instance). Did something change in the Wiki software that busted this? - Richfife (talk) 17:08, 26 January 2008 (UTC)
Could be. I tweaked {{Box Office Leaders}} a bit recently, everything worked fine then - and the templates (Leaders and Leaders USA) haven't changed since. GregorB (talk) 18:53, 26 January 2008 (UTC)
I briefly reverted your change just to check. It had no effect (the bug still occured). Whatever is happening is not because of the template itself. - Richfife (talk) 22:27, 26 January 2008 (UTC)
I've tested the solution given above - and tweaked it, as the original version did not work correctly with date2 and year2. I believe this one should be OK... GregorB (talk) 01:23, 27 January 2008 (UTC)
I made the change. — Carl (CBM · talk) 18:19, 2 February 2008 (UTC)
Thanks! Appears to be working properly now. GregorB (talk) 22:47, 2 February 2008 (UTC)
