[edit] Background

E. L. Bowher High School opened in 1962, and is due to be replaced with a new structure about a mile away, at the corner of Detroit and Arlington. It is home to the Rebels and has well over one thousand students. In 2008 a new school will be complete to replace the old Bowsher. The new school would be 1 mile north of the old one. The current Athletic Stadium will stay and not be moved to the new location.

[edit] Rebels

The name "Rebels" has an interesting backstory to it. Given the school's location in South Toledo and the fact that army of the Confederate States of America were called rebels, the name was chosen. The mascot is a horseman named "Rowdy" and the colors are red and Colombia blue. There was controversy over the mascot in the 80's and into the early 90's. In 1992, support groups met to discuss the rebel flag and the school song, "Dixie". Apparently, there was some controversy over the use of the flag and the song. The points agreed on include the following: the name "Rebels" would be retained, the horseman will continue to be the mascot with a slight modification, the rebel flag will not be used in the school or school events, and the colors remain the same. In June 1993, a new fight song was adopted.

They are a member of the Toledo City League.
