Bowie is a Scots surname, derived from the Scottish Gaelic word buie (pronounced approximately boe-ay), meaning yellow-haired. The family is a sept of Clan Donald and originates from the area of Kilmarnock, Ayrshire. The name spread from Scotland with Scottish emigrants.
