Nathaniel Bowditch Middle School is a public middle school in Foster City, California. It was built in the late 1960s, and makes use of the pod system of architecture that was popular during that time period. Bowditch is located in a residential area and across the street from a levee which follows the San Francisco Bay. Due to the affluence of Foster City and the families whose children attend the school, Bowditch has a highly involved parent community and is relatively wealthy compared to other area middle schools. Bowditch serves over 990 students.

[edit] Curriculum

Bowditch offers a variety of courses, including art, sculpture, drama, music (both band and orchestral), cooking, journalism, industrial arts, astronomy, marine biology, French, and Spanish. It is among one of the few schools in the San Mateo-Foster City School District to offer geometry. Students meeting certain academic requirements have the option of combining some language arts courses in order to increase the number of elective courses that they may take. Bowditch is a member of the Art David Athletic League (ADAL), and offers golf, volleyball, basketball, track and field, tennis, and soccer. All teams are available to all grades, however volleyball is girls only.

[edit] Extracurricular activities

Bowditch has many extracurricular programs, including student council, music, drama, and sports. Bowditch also sponsors other small programs including K.O.O.L. Kids, an elementary school student tutoring program. Students from Bowditch also participate in MATHCOUNTS, a national math competition. In 2007 Bowditch placed first in the Northern California division and fourth in California state.

[edit] Awards

Bowditch Middle School was awarded the California Distinguished School Award in 2005.[2] It was the only middle school to be eligible for that award in the district based on STAR test scores. The award was accepted at Disneyland park in Los Angeles, and now hangs in the school office.

[edit] January 2008 bomb threat

On Friday, January 11, a bomb threat was called into the office.[3] In response, the staff held the students at the positions required for earthquake drills for the last 10 minutes of 6th period, and all of 7th period. The students were then given papers to give to parents concerning the call, and told to leave immediately. Students were not allowed to collect backpacks or bicycles, return to the school, and those students who had PE 6th period were sent home in their gym clothes. The search for the bomb continued after school ended, but no bomb was found.
