[edit] Page protection
Hello. I've removed the {{protect}} tag you placed on your userpage because it is not protected. Only admins can apply protection. Requests for page protection are made at Wikipedia:Requests for page protection or by asking an administrator. Please don't add to protection templates to Wikipedia pages which are not actually protected. Thanks. -- zzuuzz (talk) 03:57, 6 January 2007 (UTC)
Hello. I've replaced the tag. Seeing as it's my userpage, I can put whatever I want on it. If the {{protect}} tag was only able to be applied by admins, then I wouldn't be able to apply it. Thanks. Bovester 05:51, 6 January 2007 (UTC)Bovester
- Thank you for replying. Thinking that it is your userpage and that you can do what you want with it is actually a misconception, but one there is no need to elaborate on right now. The point is that the template is not yours, and incorrect usage of this template affects other administrative aspects of the project, such as the main namespace article category you are populating. Also you may not be aware that adding the template does not actually apply protection - protection is a technical procedure which can only be done by admins - the template on its own is completely ineffective. I said that incorrect usage of this template affects other parts of Wikipedia (which takes us beyond the realm of you affecting only your page) - I would like to suggest something which may suit everyone. You are quite entitled to say that you want no one to edit your userpage - you should put up a big notice saying "Please don't edit this page" or similar to replace the protection tag which will continue to be removed. No one will bother you again. -- zzuuzz (talk) 06:02, 6 January 2007 (UTC)
Thank you for being so polite, and for trying to explain the use of the tag. I understand that it does not actually protect my page, only that the little message comes up. If other parts of the Wikipedia are affected that is not my fault, as I did not create the template nor did I decide to have it affect other pages. The simple fact is that I put some text onto my user page which turns out to have the effect I wanted-that no one would write on my page. Bovester 06:12, 6 January 2007 (UTC)
- Please stop put the {{protected}} template on your user page. It has zero effect, and will not stop others from writing on that page (which is not truly "yours" as User:Zzuuzz has indicated). The effect it has on other portions of the Wikipedia, such as having the page listed at Category:Protected when it is not in fact protect, is a disruption to the project, and may fall under the purview of a WP:POINT infraction. Indeed, the template itself says: "This template is not to be used as a bluff. Only use it on FULLY PROTECTED pages." I'm not trying to be a dick, but I, along with other editors, have attempted to reason with you in the past, but these attempts to inform you of your role in the project (which we hope is one of a legitimate contributor) appear to have fallen on deaf ears, and have been met with edit summaries such as "Go get a life" and "If I can do it, then I'll do it." Again, if you have a legitimate reason to have your user page protected, please request it at WP:RPP. Putting the protection template up when the page is not protected may actually serve as a magnet for any potential vandals, kind of like a big flashing sign that says "don't push this button," y'know? Otherwise, assume good faith that other users will not edit your user page... and for what it's worth, even I would personally revert any unapproved edits to your user page by others if I catch them while on recent changes patrol. Thanks for your time. --Kinu t/c 07:22, 11 January 2007 (UTC)
[edit] Don Imus
Hi Bovester, thanks for linking the Drudge Report page. I wikified your contribution because we should not copy and paste from other websites. I also merged it into the previous section (it may not be contrary to the reports on WFAN and so does not seem to require a new section, yet). I hope you agree with the changes.
