Category counting

There are various bots which, as part of their operation, count the number of articles in a category and do something with the result. Would it be possible for a bot to be created which would accept requests for counting? That is, the bot userspace contains a list of categories, which can be added to by any user. When the bot is run, each category is counted and the results recorded in the same or another page. If someone can create/modify a bot to do this, I can add template code to the page to enable the results to be called by templates. Happymelon 15:03, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

I would be glad to add this to my bot, but I don't like the idea of allowing users to add to the list themselves. Instead they could just ask me to add the category to the list of categories counted. That's more secure for various reasons. — Carl (CBM · talk) 15:07, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
Fair enough - I can see how adding lots of large categories would generate a large workload for the bot and/or the server. Give me ten minutes and I'll have a template structure If you can make the bot work around the structure currently at User:Happy-melon/sandbox2, the values can be called direct from templates. The count for each category will end up in a page like User:VeblenBot/Count/Requests for peer review. So each category will have a different page. The counts can be transcluded from there to anywhere else. This is a more general setup, which makes the same script useful for other purposes as well (for example, for a wikiproject to count the number of articles they have tagged). — Carl (CBM · talk) 15:51, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

The original reason for this request was to automate updating Template:Copyedit progress, so a count for all the "Category:Wikipedia articles requiring copyedit from Month 200X would be helpful for me. Reminder to Create a User Page

Hi,

I would like for a bot to be created that would simply send a message to a new user, to remind them to create a Userpage. This is because some of the new pages are made by new users, who have talk and contribution pages but not User pages. If they don't have this then you will not be able to learn more about them!

Wikipedia is not MySpace, there is absolutely no need to encourage users to create userpages, it's unrelated to writing the encyclopedia, so this bot would be absolutely useless for goals of Wikipedia. MaxSem(Han shot first!) 18:36, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

New Bot Idea - Links

Hi,

I have an idea for a new bot, this is a bot that searches through pages, looking for any words that link to other wikipedia articles. For example, a Wikipedia tutorial has been created by a user, it mentions IRC, the bot would then search that, find the keyword IRC and link it to the article regarding IRC.... what do you think?

Alas, Wikipedia isn't that semantic. But there is a tool that suggests links, which you may or may not add: User:Nickj/Can We Link It. GracenotesT § 21:05, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

Wikify_bot ?

This is just an idea. It could be possible to create a bot for automatic wikification of WP pages. The bot would make a search across the names of WP articles to find an exact match and mark the found term with the squared parentheses. To avoid excessive wikilinking it would do the following:

  1. Wikilink only the first occurrence of the term in the article.
  2. Wikilink only combinations of words rather than single words.
  3. Make an additional search against WikiDictionary (or another language dictionary), and do not wikify any terms found in the dictionary. Then the bot could also wikify single-word abbreviations (not found in the dictionary).

So, what do you think? I think such bot could be very important because wikilinking is main advantage of WP compare to other resources/databases.Biophys 17:38, 2 December 2007 (UTC)

This is funny. Sorry, I did not read the previous section! Of course, main problem would be over-linking. That is why I suggested above a few possible ways to overcome this. There are others. For example, one could create a list of pages "to be linked everywhere", such as geographic names, technical terms, protein names, etc. Such links are not really context-dependent if to also follow rules 1-3 above. Compilation of articles by size

Hi. I was wondering if a bot could compile all the articles about municipalities of Norway into a list which sorts the articles by size. It would look something like this:

Andøy 4.5 KB
Asker 6.5 KB
...... and so on

I would like to have the list in my user space, for instance at User:Punkmorten/Municipalities of Norway by article size.

Wikipedia:Editor assistance/Requests archival

A specialised archiving bot would be a great thing. It could scan the page for sections tagged as {{resolved}} / {{stale}} for 7 days without follow-ups and then auto-archive those sections. Unfortunately, I have no idea how to write a bot myself. I dorftrotteltalk I 22:50, December 2, 2007

One Day International cricket

Per consensus at WP:CRIC here, would someone be interested in changing links to all of the following variants to the above.

Yes it is. Redirects do the job as far as pointing to the right article, but the links appear in the text styled incorrectly. The cricket project style guide has been adjusted per the consenus and hence the request. —Moondyne 15:37, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

Header changes in 20th-21st year article

I intend to adjust (possibly collapse into a single one) the Year-specific Compact TOC ({{C20YearTOC}} and variation), and the "notes" default header will go for "references". Although that header is almost always empty, it would Still be better titled as "references", and so there is a need to replace the level 2 header "Notes" with "References" in all 20th-century year articles.

Bonus points for

  • Adding {{C20YearTOC}} before the "Events" header where it is missing and
  • Making the first header "Events" (as opposed to "Events in XXXX") everywhere.

I really enjoyed DragonsFlight's tool for AfD summaries, but it appears to have gone inactive a few months ago when DF went on a wiki-vacation. Category changes

I'm a new admin who has been approached by a user with the appropriate credentials -- he's signed up to the relevant projects, etc, and works in the area of botanic taxonomy. He asked me for help with the category-switching tasks noted below:

Adding WikiProject template to talk pages

I have been working on getting the Green Bay Packers WikiProject back up and running, and one major aspect is placing {{GreenBayPackersProject}} on every talk page in the three categories Category:Green Bay Packers, Category:Green Bay Packers players, and Category:Green Bay Packers coaches. This encompasses around 912 articles, thus I do not want to do this by hand :-) Any help from a bot would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Recategorize

Request for a bot to fix date links that break autoformatting

There are many pieces of text that break autoformatting. For example:

  • [[5 November|November 5]]
  • [[5th November]]
  • [[5 November]][[1980 in music|1980]]
  • [[1 November|1]]-[[5 November]] date ranges should not be linked because they end up looking like '1-November 5'.
  • many more

Editors keep adding these invalid formats due to understandable confusion about putting brackets around dates. They are created faster than they can fixed by routine editing. The errors are difficult for a human to detect but easy for a machine. Several people, including me, have script to address these (e.g. see my monobook script) but they are not quick enough to cope. However, a high speed bot is needed to keep up with the constant creation of these errors. Is anyone willing to create a bot for it? Lightmouse (talk) 11:34, 8 December 2007 (UTC)

New WikiProject

Could a bot please tag all talk pages of articles in sub-categories of Category:People with a template (something like 'This article is within the scope of WikiProject Persondata')? Much appreciated for WikiProject Persondata. Auroranorth (!) 11:43, 10 December 2007 (UTC)

I don't think this is the best way to identify all the articles which should have persondata. First there are ~450,000 biographies on WP, almost all of which are already tagged with {{WPBiography}}. Rather than duplicating the effort which has gone into this tagging, the various lists and categories of articles within WPBiography, i.e. Category:FA-Class biography articles, (or a script using them) could be used to generate a list of all biographies without too much effort. Second, unlike most other WikiProjects, which are concerned with the content of the article, WikiProject Persondata would essentially be visiting the article once to add persondata, then not caring about it again (provided the persondata is not vandalised). To me a WikiProject banner on the talk page implies some sort of ongoing commitment to the article. If it was really, really necessary to have some of talk page tag, I would talk to the WPBiography people about adding another maintenance parameter to {{WPBiography}}. Thanks a lot for your help. However, using AWB (without logging on) to create a list, and save it to a text file can only hold 10,000 links. Would it be possible for a bot to create a list of all biography articles? I know it's a HUGE ask, but to get started with WikiProject Persondata (and to coordinate a 'drive') we really need a huge list. Invalid XML/HTML Entity Fix

There appear to be some invalid XML entities such as

&#0xfeff;

that occur on older pages which make XML parsing of Wikipedia difficult.

Would it be possible to create a bot that would either remove invalid/unparsed entities or encode the leading ampersand as &amp; so that they are not parsed? Thanks. Pkalmar (talk) 23:11, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

Removing it would work, but it seems like it would be a safer solution to just HTML/XML encode the leading ampersand of invalid entities. This way the displayed text would not be altered, but the back end source would no longer be invalid. I've already modified my code that I am using to parse Wikipedia to handle the case of this specific user, but it seems to me that it would be helpful for potential parsers down the road to have things encoded properly all across Wikipedia.Pkalmar (talk) 02:55, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
The bad signatures I have inspected (for example [1]) say [[User:Fvw|&#0xfeff;]]--[[User:fvw|fvw]][[User talk:Fvw|<SMALL><FONT COLOR="green">*</FONT></SMALL>]]. I think the unneeded [[User:Fvw|&#0xfeff;]] should be removed as you suggest. Then we can see whether other stray &#0xfeff; are left and should get another treatment. Orphaned images check throught Category:Digimon media

Is it possible for a bot to run an orphaned images check through Category:Digimon media or more specifically, through the images that are still linked to the soft-directed articles within Category:Digimon by level? All those articles are now soft redirect but there are now a lot of orphaned nonfree images out there (I've personally gotten about 50 myself fairly quickly). There is also a problem is almost of them in regards to the article backlinks but the orphaned images problem are enough for now. -- Ricky81682 (talk) 02:24, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

Redirect Template

I've recently created a template that I am still testing. The point of this template is to list redirects that link to a section of the article. That way, if the section name is changed, the template can be checked in order to see if a redirect went to the section that was renamed. Anyone up for that? I think it would make more sense to have the bot just alert people when they break a link. The continuing effort required to maintain an accurate list of redirects on the talk page of each article would be painful. Yes, I'm sorry if I was unclear about that. The problem is that when someone adds a section redirect, they probably won't think to update the template. The same when they change the redirect to point somewhere else. With the template list approach, the bot would spend a lot of time updating the templates when the links aren't broken. As I see it, if there was a list on the talk page of an article, people would expect it to be mostly accurate. So the bot would need to update it more often than once a month. Request for change to User:ImageBacklogBot

I have run into a small issue with this bot, and would like to discuss a very easy solution. During the approval, it was mentioned that the bot would replace fair use images outside of article space, using Image:Example.jpg, but I don't think that anyone considered the ramifications of this.

What has happened over the past week, is that over 500 pages now have that "test image" on them, ranging from Featured Article supages, portals, infoboxes (transcluded to multiple mainspace articles) templates, navigation templates, and userboxes.

I do not disagree that fair use images should be removed, but replacing them with example.jpg is causing many pages to have a very unprofessional look, and I would like to request that the bot's regex (as seen here) be modified, and instead, the fair use images be replaced with Image:Pix.gif, which is a single pixel, invisible image, that would not disrupt mainspace.

Before this bot began, Example.jpg had 10-20 links at a time, and was an easy way to monitor testing by newcomers, and to monitor vandalism. Now, if you go take a look at the links, there is an extreme amount of cleanup work that is needed, to remove the test image from so many different pages and templates. Simply changing the regex to use the invisible image would solve this issue, and with some work, the Example.jpg page can get back to normal. I discussed this with Cobi briefly via IRC in the bot channel, and he agreed that would be an easy, and non-disruptive solution. It also may be worth evaluating if template space should be left alone, as the templates that use fair use images (such as military logos, [2] and navigation templates, etc.,) are transcluded into article space, and justifies their use. WP:FU #9 is understood to rule out fair use images in templates. Furthermore, if a fair use image were used in a template, it would still need a rationale for every article which used the template, which could be too difficult to maintain. The template you mention, however, is only used in one article. The usual solution for low-use images is to either use the image directly in the article, or pass the image as a parameter to the template; that way it's only used in the article and the template is never flagged. That's fine, I'm not arguing the removal of the fair use images, but just passing along what Cobi and I discussed earlier, and that was just an idea, not a proposed change to the bot. The main issue is the use of Example.jpg, which looks quite unprofessional in mainspace, and could easily be changed to the invisible gif instead, which would allow the bot to function and not have a test image in template/portals/infoboxes, etc. Thanks for clarifying the template issue, though! I agree with what is said, that the Example.jpg is wrong to use, so I would thing that the image should be the Pix.gif mentioned above, as that will give a blank image, while holding the space, but there should be some added lines of text that won't let it run on pages like Wikipedia:Featured pictures and subpages, and the like. <DREAMAFTER> <TALK> 22:40, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

Well... a very simple bot with a simple job

Hi,

New bot idea/request... a bot that archives the Help Desk every day, as it gets FAR TOO LONG everyday, if users have slow computers, it takes too long to load.

What do you think, if you decline, can you give me the name of the user that should archive the help desk, so that I can bug them to archive it :).

If you click on the ninth icon (from the left) in the edit toolbar, you get the following text:

A google search turns up 5,970 Wikipedia pages with "Insert non-formatted text here" in them. Many are in userspace, and many have been reverted, but an large percentage of articles that I just checked had edits at least a couple of days old, unreverted.

It would be great to have a bot that would revert such edits immediately, and put a note on the editor's talk page that test edits should be done in the sandbox.

And yes, I know there are other phrases that come from the toolbar, such as "Insert footnote text here" (in 20 articles, oddly enough; shouldn't actually be visible to Google), but the "no-formatted text" one seems to be a bigee. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 23:49, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

Not all additions are just testing: sometimes, Wikipedians accidentally click the toolbar, or drag icons from the toolbar into the edit box, when making a constructive edit. Toolbar edits get buried under other ones; often, buttons are clicked in conjunction, and instead of <sup>Superscript text</sup><nowiki>Insert non-formatted text here</nowiki>, you'll get something like <sup><nowiki>Superscript text</nowiki></sup>. For this reason, a bot probably couldn't remove testing that well. I have a Java program that screen scrapes through articles, looking for multiple regular expressions – perhaps I could post lists onwiki of affected articles so that editors can go through the lists and clean them up. I saw something like two cases of constructive edits that contained a mistake as well, in the 20+ cases where I removed toolbar-generated text. Both of those, I think, were from registered editors. If the bot were only to remove IP address edits, the error rate would be virtually zero, I think; certainly a high enough ratio to justify using a bot rather than human beings. If the bot makes one mistake in a hundred, is it really worth having human beings go through the 100 edits to find the good one, as opposed to reverting them all, and expecting the good editor to deal with the problem. Particularly because the bot would notify editors that their edit had been reverted.
As you can see, I'm not a big fan of the "put out a list of errors and editors will come approach. Cluebot isn't 100% correct, I assume, but it's immensely valuable in vandal-fighting, for example. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 14:18, 13 December 2007 (UTC)

Instead, a human should check histories of every suspicious page and revert/remove vandalism because editing tests not always end with clicking a single button. Check for & insert template onto Greater Manchester talk pages

WikiProject Greater Manchester is gearing up for article assessment. Is there a bot that could check the talk pages of all articles in Category:Greater Manchester and its child categories, inserting {{WikiProject Greater Manchester|importance=|class=}} where that template is absent?

I've had a reasonably good look through all of the subcategories, and found only three which have non-Manchester content in them:

Wikiproject member list maintenance

I have resurrected this request from the archives as it has not been acted on successfully. Can someone create or add to a bot that would do the following:

  1. Compile a list of users by scraping links to the User namespace from a particular page (ie a WikiProject participants list) (the "members")
  2. Periodically scrape recent changes from a list of pages, as defined by links present on another page (ie a Project Watchlist, pages in category, etc) (the "watched pages")
  3. Search for recent edits by each user made to those watched pages
  4. Thereby generate a list of all members sorted by their most recent edit to the watched pages.

I'm sure that with some imaginative coding, server pressure could be kept to a minimum. Any takers? Happymelon 14:05, 14 December 2007 (UTC)

Check for & insert template onto United Kingdom talk pages

This is an almost exacting request per the above (for Greater Manchester) but for WikiProject UK Geography (I've just learned of this page and how effective the work is!)

Could a bot be developed/tasked with the objective of checking the talk pages of all articles in Category:Geography of the United Kingdom and Category:Environment of the United Kingdom and their child categories, inserting {{WPUKgeo|importance=|class=}} where that template is absent? The main subcategory the project would benefit from would be Category:Settlements in the United Kingdom, if there is some problem (such as time or scale) with targetting the others.

WP: in Template namespace

WP: was recently made a redirect of Wikipedia:, causing any template with the syntax {{WP:FOO}} to no longer transclude Template:WP:FOO but instead to transclude Wikipedia:FOO. All templates beginning with WP: need to be moved from Template:WP:FOO to Template:WP FOO and the transclusions on the actual pages need to be fixed by a bot. List available here. Some of the transclusions have been fixed manually; probably wouldn't be the worst idea to still move those templates and update the transclusions as well.... Inline references occuring before punctuation or after but with a space inbetween

For inline references, I think the reference is supposed to occur after adjacent punctuation marks and without a space in between. Frequently, a reference occurs after a punctuation mark but with a space between the two, or alternatively, before the punctuation mark. While not a bot, a script you can add to your monobook does this, copy the following into your monobook.js,

This adds a link in your toolbox called "Fix reference marks". Note that per WP:FOOT, either a space between punctuation and the reference, or the reference placed immediately next to punctuation is correct. This script uses the latter, and is helpful when there is a mix of reference mark styles on a page, as well as when there are spaces between references. A bot to help out ACC

We could use a bot at WP:ACC, that perhaps could query the database for maybe the top 5-10 top hits in antispoof, to aid us in creating new accounts.

For instance, say, a user requests User:One, and, MW returns that it's similar to User:ONE, as the first hit. MW does NOT return, User:0ne, whom may well be an established editor. Neither would Special:Listusers/One. We could really use a bot, that would use the antispoof patterns, and, return what users are similar, using {{ACC|s|user|X edits: Last edit made on XX/XX/XXXX}}. Just 5-10 would suffice. (see: This discussion)

RfBs

Word count and SMOG grade

I'd like to see a bot that would go through articles under peer review and calculate word counts and SMOG grades (and possibly other statistics as well), excluding things that Wikipedia:Article length does not count as "readable prose". These would then be presented -- along with the revision number from which they were last taken -- on the peer reviews. It could also add comments such as the following:

  • Under 200 words: "This article seems to be a stub."
  • Over 10,000 words: "This article seems to be too long and probably needs to be split."
  • Smog index under 7: "Longer words and more compound or complex sentences may make this article more interesting, more precise and less wordy."
  • Smog index over 16: "This article seems to have too many long words and sentences for even most university graduates to easily read and understand."

This would be a nice tool; the main difficulty I see is getting it to ignore wiki code and mathematics, which shouldn't be counted. It might be more convenient for the tool to run from a web page; you type in the name and it returns the SMOG grade. I used my linkchecker code base and hacked on the functionality that you requested. The SMOG thing wasn't easy to implement since its rather hard to figure out how many sentences there in an article. Bot to convert templates to an better-practice template, on a regular basis

Just saw that people at Template:ArticleHistory/Deprecation think that it would be useful to have a bot convert instances of some of the templates that people add to an article's talk regarding its history into {{ArticleHistory}}, in such a way that the bot would just go through and regularize the simpler-input templates that ArticleHistory kind-of-deprecates into the better-practice template that it is. At the page listed above, a number of templates are noted to be entirely superfluous to ArticleHistory. As such it would be useful to have a bot to convert instances of these templates to ArticleHistory, expanding one already on a page, if necessary. Nothing wrong with a clone, but there is a bot which converts various talk page templates over to AH. This is a difficult sort of task to fully automate; each template is used in a handful of strange ways that would require fairly extensive error-checking if not done by hand. Furthermore, it's not exactly clear that converting certain templates is worth the effort; many of the pages have no other template, so AH doesn't compress anything. Tell me about it :D - just writing a function to standardise the dozen or so possible date formats is giving me a headache! My indended startpoint is a list formed from an intersection of Special:Whatlinkshere/Template:ArticleHistory and Special:Whatlinkshere/Template:GA, etc - pages which contain articlehistory and other templates. Once that list's cleared I'd work more intersections to find pages with more than one content template. Finally, pages with only one content template to be converted are, as you say, only barely worth the effort, but I'd probably be on a roll by then, so if I ever get there I might as well go the whole hog :D. We already have a process (for example, see Wikipedia:New pages patrol) to check all new articles; it's not at all clear why a bot is needed, except to identify the articles that were missed. (Discussed elsewhere, earlier, I think.) And as far as "alerting admins" to check problem pages, that's not the way we do things here - regular editors can fix most things themselves. If page really does need to be deleted, the first step normally is for a regular editor to tag it as such - that way, admins can focus on deleting problem pages identified by others. The pywikipedia framework seems to be a favorite and it comes with a basic.py which has plenty of comments. However for most task I use AWB which is similar to a bot but doesn't have condition (no if statements). Incorrect Ref Syntax

This is a request for a bot to clean up incorrect usage of "ref" tags in conjunction with URLs. For instance, sometimes people add the following reference: <ref>[http://www.google.com Google<!-- Bot generated title -->]</ref> This results in the following: Some statement.[1]

As you can see, this is not helpful at all. Because of the opening and closing brackets, we have a reference that simply shows [1]. If the user had added the website correctly (<ref>[http://www.google.com Google<!-- Bot generated title -->]</ref>, without the brackets), the reference would show correctly.[1]

Thus, this request is for a bot to find instances where the REF tag displays a URL number and fix it. My guess is that there are several thousand of these. Timneu22 (talk) 15:10, 27 December 2007 (UTC)

Surely a much better use of the bot's time would be to create a list of these articles so the plain URLs can be converted to {{cite web}} format. A simple URL is not considered an acceptable reference per WP:V and WP:CITE, so why bother fixing these when they can be used as flags to mark where further work is needed? If somebody wonder what what the URL matching characters are not [ ] < > " \s for the regular [http:// ] style. For the visible link is a bit more complicated, not . , \\ : ; ? ! [ ] < > " \s with a special case for ( ) where they much appear in pairs. A further complication is the way MediaWiki handle the bold (''') and italics ('') where transformed to their HTML equivalents and then does the link parsing. I propose the follow AWB regex:

Whoops, looks like I simplified it too much. The second pattern is what can't be at the end, I've updated the sample. Can't test it since my copy of AWB is broken (it doesn't replace the backrefernces), but I'm pretty sure it'll work. This is entirely possible to do with only AWB. Yes, use the HTML "title" element. Sure, there are some sites where this isn't useful, but on others, like the Washington Post, it's pretty close to the actual article title. Just to let you know : Following this, I've written a pywikipedia-based script (working from a dump) which replace all bad refs (link, with or without brackets) by [url html_title] when content-type is text/html. A few bot requests

Got a few requests here, one of which would probably be a brand new bot.

  1. Can somebody have their bot go through Category:College football and add {{WikiProject College football|class=|importance=}} to them (please exclude Category:British Collegiate American Football League teams and Category:American football teams in Mexico)? I was doing this with AWB but there appears to be a lot more than I expected.
  2. Take those unassessed articles and if there is another project that has assessed those articles, apply those rating to WPCFB (BetacommandBot?).
  3. Ok, new bot. This would make the jobs of those that help administer a WikiProject keep the members page in line. Many projects have an active user list and an inactive user list. After you get a lot of members, that can be hard to maintain. I would like to have a list of all members on a subpage and have a bot go through that list and get that user's last contribution date and then order them by last contribution date. Even better, for whatever project, take that project's main category (in my case Category:College football) and create a list of all articles and if the editor has made a contribution in the last x months, find the last contribution date of an article in that category list. The last part would just be icing, but the overall last contribution date would be helpful. (How does WP:MILHIST keep their list to up-to-date?)↔NMajdantalk 21:06, 31 December 2007 (UTC)

Removal of WP:CFB importance rating from tag on talk pages

WikiProject College football recently decided to eliminate the importance rating from the project tag on the talk page. As part of this, we would like to remove the "|importance=(low|mid|high|top|<empty>)" part from the talk page to help prevent confusion from people that may think this functionality still works, and prevent any articles from being warred over that "it should be high/it should be mid" when it doesn't even matter anymore. We have 9000+ articles (see Wikipedia:WikiProject College football/Assessment that should be checked. This would be a one-time run. No hurry in completion, editing 2/minute for several nights for several days would be perfectly fine. Should not start for a week (Jan 10) to allow any project members to object at the last second. If the functionality has been removed from the template I fail to see why this is a good use of 9000 database write queries. Hmn... I've just had what I'm sure is not a new idea: wouldn't it be helpful to have a page somewhere that contained a simple list of conversions to check for when editing pages. A module could easily be written in various languages that checks for these phrases and inserts the relevant conversion when it gets a hit. Keep it simple and fast, and loads of bots could use it to perform these little checks whenever they're editing a page anyway. Wikipedia:WikiProject Somerset has 1659 assessed pages with class and importance ratings. Due to my initial stupidity some of these have {{Somerset}} which was later converted, by someone wiser to {{WikiProject Somerset}}. Would it be possible for a bot to convert {{Somerset}} to {{WikiProject Somerset}} without affecting the class & importance ratings (or the nesting of project banners) on article talk pages? I would like at a later date to create a template for the county using Template:County with the title Template:Somerset in line with other counties in England eg Template:Greater Manchester, Template:Warwickshire, Template:Cheshire, Template:Cumbria, Template:Merseyside, Template:Lancashire, Template:Wiltshire. I can't do that at present because the name is taken & I don't want to just delete the current template as this would affect over 1000 articles & mean a lot of work. Automatic listing of RFC is broken.

Automatic listing of RFC appears to be broken. See all of the complaints at Wikipedia_talk:Requests_for_comments. My own listing for Chocolate Thai appears to be tagged just as it should be, but several hours later, it hasn't been listed. If the bot is up, but it takes several hours to be listed, then RFC policy should be changed to allow manual tagging.

I've heard that this is all largely done by BetaCommandBot, so I contacted the bot's owner User:Betacommand. I don't see any other bots that do this on the list of active bots. Zenwhat (talk) 04:17, 5 January 2008 (UTC)

Replacing one template with two

This should be an easy one!

Template:Aircontent currently includes "See also" material, as well as a navbox: Template:Aviation lists. WikiProject Aircraft is considering separating these templates so that the "See also" material in "Aircontent" can be moved further up the page to its more customary location, while leaving the navbox at the bottom of the page.

To do this, we'd need a bot to replace every instance of {{aircontent}} with {{aircontent}} {{aviation lists}} and "Related content" with "See also". Who's got the bot for the job if we decide to proceed? --Rlandmann (talk) 00:09, 29 December 2007 (UTC)

Abridged noticeboards

There have been repeated complaints about the length of the noticeboards, esp. by dial-up users and others with a slow connection, see here for more. My idea was to have an abridged page, something like Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard (abridged) that would transclude WP:AN. A set of <noinclude> tags would then be used on WP:AN, and all a bot would need to be able to do is move the </noinclude> tag according to the number of H2 headers; the opening <noinclude> tag would stay fixed at the top of the page. Easier idea using an existing bot: Have WP:AN archived by MiszaBot to Wikipedia:Administrator's noticeboard/Older, leaving 8 headers behind. Have Wikipedia:Administrator's noticeboard/Older archived to the normal archives by the same bot. WP:AN then only contains a short collection of headers, but Wikipedia:Administrator's noticeboard/Extended, which transcludes both AN and AN/O, remains at the full length. Comments? Dablink templates

Is it possible to get a bot to replace indented and italic text at the top of pages, like:

with the appropriate dablink template (in this case {{otheruses4}}, but there's a number of different ones):

Cleaning up the use of Biography templates

Currently, there is confusing use of three templates for the different Dictionary of Australian Biography and Australian Dictionary of Biography. Up to now, the {{Tl|Australian Dictionary of Biography}} redirected to {{Tl|Dictionary of Australian Biography}}. I have now replaced the redirect with source code plus a warning sign asking to replace "{{Australian Dictionary of Biography|" with "{{Dictionary of Australian Biography|"! Thus, I request that a bot does this, even though less than 50 articles are affected, and one could handle this manually.

Fair-use in non-mainspace

I've run across a couple of fair-use images that were being used in the userspace, usually by accident of someone who created an article in the userspace adn then copy/paste moved it, or who don't know our general policy against non-free media outside the mainspace. I'd like a bot that could scan the fair-use/non-free image categories and pick up file-links to non-mainspace pages, and then add a cleanup category/template. I know nothing of programming, but do use AWB and would be willing to learn how to run it under another interface (and bot-username), if a more experienced user could code it. Thanks. I think Betacommandbot does this, among many other image-related things, although I'm not sure. Regarding AWB, the bot function is no different to the normal interface, except that it automatically saves every X seconds (so if you're confident you've got all the settings right, you can go away and have a cup of tea and come back 500 articles later). You're right - BCB does so many things in the image namespace I thought this was covered too. Well AWB is not really the best task for this - I would personally code a bot in python making use of pywikipedia. For something like this you can use the MediaWiki api to easily (and very quickly) enumerate links to any image - something like http://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=backlinks&bltitle=Main%20Page&blnamespace=1|2|3|4|5|6|7|8|9|10|11|12|13|14|15|100|101&bllimit=500] will give you all links from the main page, for instance, in non-mainspace. Midnight update

This one's reeeeeeaaly simple, but I'd like it added to a bot that runs continuously rather than MelonBot, which is decidedly on-and-off. Wikipedia:TFD/T is supposed to be a shortcut for "Templates for deletion/Today", and so currently points to Wikipedia:Templates for deletion/Log/2008 January 7. I'd very much like this to be bot updated to always point to the current day's TfD archive. The archives are named very systematically (four-digit-year, full-spelt-month, date-unpadded), so this should be an absolute doddle to add to any suitable bot. I've tried using variables in the redirect path, but it doesn't work for some reason. Any chance of this being done?? Happymelon 21:26, 7 January 2008 (UTC)

Automatic clean-up notifications

Hi there, following this discussion, I've come here to see if anyone can help. Essentially, I was wondering if there was a way to be notified if any article tagged by a certain WikiProject has a cleanup tag added to it? From this, ideally it would be great to be able to make an automatic to-do list - the problem at the moment is that cleanup tags are being added to articles and no one knows about it until they happen to come across the article. See cat fr:Catégorie:Commune de France for a complete list. I'm not sure that this would be a good idea, thought. Notability !! There are no inclusion guidelines for Communes in the French project. Replacing {{GreenBayPackersProject}} with {{GreenBayPackersProject|class=}}

  • If the article is already rated by another WikiProject, then {{GreenBayPackersProject|class="Same Class"}} (Where "Same Class" is substituted with the already assessed class).
  • If article is not assessed by any other WikiProject, then {{GreenBayPackersProject|class=}}.
  • If it is a category, template, image, or not an article, then {{GreenBayPackersProject|class=NA}}.
