Botany (New Zealand electorate)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Botany is one of seventy electorates of New Zealand delineated by the Representation Commission following the 2006 Census of Population and Dwellings. It is the newest electorate of New Zealand, and will be contested for the first time at the 2008 election. Because it takes in the suburban parts of the National-leaning seat of Clevedon and the more affluent suburbs of Manukau East, it is regarded as a paper win for National.

Botany is centred on the high-growth suburbs in South East Auckland, including East Tamaki, Dannemora and the eponymous Botany Downs.

National's sole Chinese MP, Pansy Wong, has been preselected as the candidate for Botany, and due to both the voting demographics of the electorate and the high proportion of Asian residents, is widely expected to capture the seat for National.
